A classic adventure from the creator of Drizzt!

High in the Snowflake Mountains sits the Edificant Library, a place of scholarly study for priests, bards, and others. Now from the hidden vaults beneath the library a devastating curse is unleashed, and a young cleric must battle the terrifying creatures set loose by a malevolent, consuming essence that's been released, before his own brethren turn against him. Cadderly must put his studies to the test and enter the catacombs far below to save his brothers and himself.

Great Start to A High Fantasy Series

Great start to a high fantasy series by R.A. Salvatore. The audio performance is superbly done by Victor Bevine. It is a slow start at building the environment and the characters, with everything built up to the actions in last few chapters. The story flows nicely, and writing is beautiful. I hung in there for the first few chapters; once I got hold on the characters, it becomes a page-turner, with a YA romance budding (yes!). I look forward to the next book!

great salvatore classic

some memorable moments for sure. good for teenagers and adult fantasy fans. want to listen to this quintet before moving on to drizzt transitions. (which ill read myself because victor bevine doesnt do the audio books for transitions) awesome seeing what amazing inteligence and charisma (cadderly) can be like in the forgotten realms setting. Clearly a low level fighter/priest but an amazing scholar and one who can think on his feet makes this a extremely likable character. and one i can relate to more than drizzt. (still love drizzt though)... Victor Bevine is the best, hands down. Sometimes i wished they brought in a female to do the women... but he does 10/10 for his ability in everything else.

An evil curse has been unleashed and no one knows!

Canticle: Forgotten Realms The Cleric Quintet Book 1

An evil curse has been unleashed upon the inhabitants of the Library which is a center of both learning and protection for the land. As the library degrades into state where almost everyone is following their most base desires with the dedication of a sociopath, a priest and a druid seem to be the only ones who haven't lost their minds. As the deaths mount, the library is being searched to find the source of the evil curse.

Unfortunately, the designer of the curse is adept at raising undead help to defend the curse. With the help of the undead and a demon conjured from the infernal plane of existence, the priest's work is deadly dangerous at best.

As the priest begins his search he finds that if he can distract people from their base desires, that he can get some help from them. With the aid of a druid, two dwarves, and martial arts master, he begins his quest to stop the evil.

I enjoyed this book.

Best Regards, Anthony

What an absolutely fantastic place to start getting into fantasy literature! Wonderful pacing, lovable , and some edge of your seat cliffhangers!

Exciting and compelling author

Victor Bevine is my favorite narrator. R A Salvatore always keeps the story going with unpredictable plots. The Canticle Series is no exception.

Good Story Deeply Embedded im Forgotten Realms

This was an OK story by Salvatore. Not his best work, but it is deeply embedded in Forgotten Realms mythos, dipicting clerics and undead, wizards and imps, dwarves, druids, and monks... all centered around an ancient library. This focus on familiar themes and hearing the author's approach to the lore was enjoyable for me.

Unfortunately, I found unusual mistakes by an otherwise high quality performance to be distracting.

This includes:
* occasional strange pauses that place emphasis on the wrong words ("..it curved around her neck [pause] and shoulders.")
* missing pauses at "dinkas transitions", making it difficult to realize the setting or point of view has changed
* use of unusual pronunciation ("it was a culmination of his lived experiences" pronouncing lived with a hard i.)

These minor but unusual mistakes were a distraction and took away from the story flow and an otherwise strong performance by Bevine.

This is the first book of a trilogy. And while I did enjoy listening, I am not particularly motivated to listen to the continuation of the story.

Fantastic

I read the 4 books a long time ago and decided to also get them on audio book. This book is as good as I remember and the narration is excellent.

If you want as book that drags you in and make you feel your there this book does that. Characters feel real and you get a sense of there struggles.

Loved it, always enjoy Salvatore read by Bevine

You can't beat the writing style of Salvatore. Levine does a great job of making each character come to life.
