Mediocre

If you can get passed the obvious political push and personal opinions, this is a nice book. Could not listen around my young children because of the language. I saw one review encouraging teens to listen, just be aware that she does use the “F” word and all others. I had hoped for more details on each person, but I understand the data is lacking. It could have been great - pushy opinions make it only okay, for me.

Awesome history, heavy-handed political agenda

This book contains 52 great five minute biographies, none of them concerning the usual suspects. You can read about Cleopatra or Amelia Earhart lots of places. This is a sampler of people you probably haven't heard of, which is exactly what I wanted. There have been some powerful/influential women of all races and religions going back thousands of years and here are the details. The brevity makes this an easy listen. It's straight forward and concise enough to be accessible to kids, but it's very informative to adults.

Beware: If you chafe at being lectured about social justice, this author may be a challenge for you. She's not the kind of historian who lets the facts speak for themselves. She shares her views. IMO everyone would benefit from having a broader knowledge of history. She clearly has a passion for inspiring disenfranchised women, which is noble. But, making visitors form outside that group feel welcome doesn't necessarily seem to be her priority.

Fantastic,Educational and Essential

The performance was supreme. Lucy James has a voice that is one of the best I’ve heard. She was perfect for this “important “ book.
I learned more about the herstory of many amazing women in 4 hours then I have in over 70 years of life. This is a must listen for all people who support equality. It assures you that if ANY job needs to be done...there is a special woman out there to do it. Thank you Ms Lee for your exceptional book.

Political message overrides the history

I listened to sample instead of reading the reviews. I stopped 3 stories in and deleted this book because of the militant feminism. I love history and especially ones with women in it but I felt pummeled by the authors agenda and biased representation of history.

Perfect little snippets

This has so much fun bad-assery happening here! Little snippet stories I enjoyed very much. A podcast for this would be exceptional.

I learned a lot!

There weren't many names I recognized so this was a great learning experience for me. I've been a student of history all my life, but my main area of study has been in the United States during the 1800s and 1900s. History according to male historians, with the notable exceptions of Barbara Fields, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Ruth Painter Randall.

Some reviewers have criticized the author for her political views, but the title should have told them that this would be a feminist sort of book. (That's what I was thinking it would be, anyway.) Well, too bad. I was raised in the 1960s and 1970s by a widow with three children on women's wages. We got by, but it wasn't always easy. Mom was good with a budget so we never went hungry, but I remember some of the clothes I had to wear as being truly awful.

That's relevant to this review because more young women need to know the obstacles we've overcome to get even close to men in wages and power. Are we equal yet? No. Maybe if we'd learned about these remarkable women earlier in life, we'd be farther ahead in the equality struggle.
