Reeling from a negotiation gone wrong, FBI Special Agent April Ramos is caught off guard when a frazzled young woman shoves a crying baby into her arms, then disappears. Worry for the child's safety quickly turns to fear when a man claiming to be the girl's father abducts them at gunpoint. April puts her hostage negotiation skills to use to learn more about who she's dealing with: Jason Snyder, a fugitive accused of murder.
As Jason spins a tall tale about being framed for the killing of his business partner, April must sort through his claims to find the truth. A truth that becomes all the more evident after April overhears a conversation between Jason and the local sheriff and realizes something more sinister may be happening in their small town of Sweet Briar, Texas. But aligning herself with a known fugitive to uncover the burden of proof could cost April her job...or worse, her life and the lives of other innocent people.

At first, readers / listeners do not know exactly who is telling the truth. Very early in the book, the real villain is revealed leaving the rest of the book for the characters to build a case against him. There are a lot of action filled scenes as well as a plot twist.
There is a faith element in the book which is obvious but not overly preachy. DiAnn Mills does a good at showing characters who need a change of heart or need to reconnect to things eternal. When dealing with so much death and our own inability to stop it, the need to connect to something that goes beyond ourselves and our current circumstances is paramount for our own mental health. The need for humility and forgiveness, for letting go of anger and bitterness, is clearly shown as well. I thought the book showed these things in a very human and sympathetic level without being overly preachy.
Having said this, I have to admit that this is not my favorite DiAnn Mills book. I thought the story was too slow with characters repeating themselves in both internal and external dialogue. In my opinion, there were some obvious errors in the way the police and FBI conducted their searches and investigations. For instance, one scene was about searching an outside area where there was no cell service. Since they knew cell service would not work, then why not use walkie talkies or other radio devices? And this was only once instance in which they made decisions that were not realistic. The book made them look like amateur hour. This was disappointing because usually DiAnn Mills writes in a way that makes the police and FBI look more much more competent.
I thought the narrator did a decent job with the exception of how she voiced the males. Their voices were too stilted, forced sounding. Jason’s voice especially was wrong in my opinion. I think I get what she was trying to show, Jason’s stress at first, but it just didn’t work for me. I did like most of the narration, and April’s voice sounded especially on point to me.
Overall, the story was good but too long. The characters were well-written.
