Publisher's summary

In the wake of Fourth of July fireworks in Montana's Madison Valley, Hyalite County sheriff Martha Ettinger and Deputy Sheriff Harold Little Feather investigate a horrific scene at the Palisades cliffs, where a herd of bison have fallen to their deaths. Victims of blind panic caused by the pyrotechnics, or a ritualistic hunting practice dating back thousands of years? The person who would know is beyond asking, an Indian man found dead among the bison, his leg pierced by an arrow.

Farther up the valley, fly fisherman, painter, and sometime private detective Sean Stranahan has been hired by the beautiful Ida Evening Star, a Chippewa Cree woman who moonlights as a mermaid at the Trout Tails Bar & Grill, to find her old flame, John Running Boy. The cases seem unrelated - until Sean's search leads him right to the brink of the buffalo jump.

With unforgettable characters and written with his signature grace and wry humor, Buffalo Jump Blues weaves a gripping tale of murder, wildlife politics, and lost love.

Has it all, even after multiple readings

I was giving Buffalo Jump Blues another listen before jumping into the next book in the series. Keith McCafferty does what only my favorite authors manage to do: infuse his characters with such humor, melancholy, spirit, depth and emotion that I feel as if I know them. I’m always sad at the end of one of his books (but not this time, as “Cold Hearted River” is waiting for me). And I’m glad that Mr McCafferty or Audible, or whoever makes these decisions, has continued to task Rick Holmes with the narration. I don’t think Sean, Martha, Walt, Sam or any of the multiple characters I’ve come to respect could be done any better, & Mr Holmes has become their voice, for me anyway.
Thank you Mr McCafferty, Mr Holmes & Audible.

Incest

I hope the rest of this series has a little less of the main characters swapping beds. It is an unnecessary distraction. I’d rather have a good mystery set in the wondrous setting.

Surprisingly good

I have listened to the entire Sean Stranahan series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Keith McCafferty has written an original series unlike any other. Rick Holmes does a great job of bringing the characters to life.

not my favorite but still good

The story line was not my favorite but was still entertaining. Really like the characters and setting. Hoping the next in series will be a little better though.

Great continuing story

I have read all of this series so far. They are really great. The story lines are believable. As an older reader, I can relate to many of the issues, while continuing to enjoy the muystery.

i liked it overall

some of the plat was pretty predictably. i was a little put off by the fact that everyone seemed to be attracted to each other like horny school kids, but overall it was good. reminded me a lot of a Murder She Wrote episode. very nice and tidy at the end, a lot of campy moments.

My own hang up

This was the first book I have read in this series. The story was good and performed well. I was only put off for the continued reverence of the Native American characters as Indian. Not that isn't right but used so less often in current times than this book illustrated.
