Publisher's Summary

Magic isn't Taken - it's Inherited.

Eighteen-year-old Meena Song wants a normal life with a normal job and normal friends. Well, that ain't happening.

An unbelievable secret is revealed in the worst possible place - a public bathroom. Yup, gross, but still not the strangest thing she'll see today.

Who gets invited to a magical academy if you have zero magical ability? Meena does. Witches are real, but most of them are a-holes. Now, she has to figure out why she was brought to this prestigious manor in the woods, filled with lies, cliques, and one incredibly hot jerk that Meena can't seem to avoid.

Broken Wand Academy is a stand-alone episodic series that also shares the same universe as Marisa Claire's Academy of Shifters series. There's more to this world than you can possibly imagine. Watch for a future crossover series!

a great start

Broken wand academy is short ,fun read. At first I don't understand what's happening but later part where meena spend her life at academy is quite amazing. I was really invested in about finding out the relation between her grandmother and school, about her magic powers.
Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read a short fantasy.
Its good for book reading challenge . It has great pacing, so you never feel like the story is moving too fast or dragging along. The characters are great, and the story is just marvelous.

A great start to a new series.

Reviewer: Teresa Fallen Angel

Summary:
All Meena wanted was to continue her life with her friends until she met a very strange man while at work. He strange clothing and manners didn’t fit into someone from her small town. Upon learning she would be going to a local college he offered her a place at a school for magic. Now most people would have laughed at him. Meena didn’t believe him, but she remembered all the inexplicable things her Grandmother showed her. You would never think a trip to the bathroom would be life changing, but for Meena the doorway opened into an office that could change her life forever. Meena’s entrance into the world of magic was filled with humor, bullying, wonder, friendship, and maybe just maybe romance.
Things at Broken Wand Academy are not for the feint of heart leaving Meena to wonder if it isn’t worth the effort until she gets her first taste of magic and now she will fight for her place. Between learning new things, friends, and enemies, Meena and her friends have their hands full. This was a fast paced and riveting start to a new series. The audio-book brought the characters to life for the listeners enjoyment.

Great

I love everything I've read by Marisa Claire and this was no exception. I didn't like the narrator as much as her others but the story was worth the listen. Meena was a great MC and I know who I hope she ends up with. I've already read the next two episodes and looking forward to reading the rest.

Broken Wand Academy: Episode 1

This is the first episode in the Veiled World Series. This series has a very interesting take on how the witches gain their powers. Mina's grandmother use to tell her stories about magic. She didn't realize they weren't just stories. I can't wait for the next episode! Chaleeya did a great job narrating.

great

This book is a great short read/listen. my only down fall is the narrator is not my favorite. I love how you can tell the difference between characters, but the reading wasn't as smooth.
Back to the book.. I like how Meena is still cant believe magic is real but she is curious to know more. But she also see that people here are a little different on the way they act with something.
I want to know what happens next.

fun story

Just wow. This is a fun quick read and listen that I really enjoyed. What do you do when you find out that magic is real? Well you find yourself enrolled in a spell school of course! But you still don't believe it, because it can't be real right?!
I had a great time listening and reading this book. I can't wait to see what happens next

Fast-paced and great!

This magical adventure didn't last long enough! It was a great introduction to Meena, Broken Wand Academy and everyone there. Once the story really picks up it's pace and the action starts, the story ends. I can't wait to listen to the next part, and see what happens!
The narrator did an amazing job distinguishing and giving each characther their own voice - made it so much easier to follow along to the story!

Amazing

What a great start to a series. Great narrator telling the story, really easy to listen too. Starts off with the main characters finding out that she has magic and in a short space if time she is in the middle of mystery trying to find out why one of the students from the magic school was killed. I am really looking forward to the next book. If you read it you won't be disappointed.

sorry narration makes it hard to listen to

Its a short book of 6hrs listening roughly but it was painful as the narration paused on every fifth word. I only persevered as the story was interesting.

I am torn as to listen to the next episode because of how it has been read.

Short, but promising

This was a short, but decent story. I only say decent because it's really introductory.
It starts with Meena's introduction, and the introduction to the Broken Wand Academy, the colleagues, and when the action starts, puff... the book ends. I really enjoyed meeting Meena, and the plot has a lot of mistery that I'm expectant to see unraveled.

Also I'm really curious how this line will join with the Academy of Shifters series (yeah, I've already listened to Teacher's Pet, so...)

Waiting for the next one ^^

Regarding the narration, it was a bit monotone, but I got used to it, and it went smoothly until the end.

I received a free audio copy for a honest review.

Review

I had to keep reminding myself that these were novellas and are supposed to be shorter. This is the start to an episodic series and it was a really good beginning. It introduces the main character Meena and a little about her background. Without knowing that magic is real, she is invited to a prestige magic school known as Broken Wand Academy. There she learns not only she really is a magician, but a very powerful and rare one. And then that’s where it pretty much ends. The last chapter is where the only action really happens and it does draw in interest, I just wish there was a little more. It draws the reader in just enough to want to continue but for someone like me, who knows when that’ll be. It was good enough that maybe in the future, I’ll finish it but didn’t give me enough to want to pick up the sequel right away.
Meena’s character is actually very entertaining. I really like how she handled herself in most of the situations she found herself in. There are obvious, spoiled witches who grew up knowing their powers and of course don’t want people in the academy that didn’t grow up the way that they do. I liked how there was a little more to these enemies given to us in the last chapter but overall, the characters felt very generic. Each character filled a specific role that they had and it just didn’t feel like these characters brought anything new or defining to the story.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, A Curse of Magic by Marisa Claire was a decent read. If you are looking for a quick read full of magic, this is definitely the book for you. It definitely fills that magic want without having to devote yourself to a long book full of information. As a novella, the book does exactly what it sets out to do but I just wish there was a little more. Since everything is now established, the rest of the books will probably be more action filled but I’m in no rush to pick them up. While I really did like Meena’s character, the cast felt generic and didn’t bring any defining features. Each one fulfills their purpose but nothing more than that. Again, if you’re looking for a short book that gets straight to the point, this is the book for you and I’d definitely recommend it.

AUDIO REVIEW

NOTE: The narration does not affect my rating of the book

I really enjoyed the audio. It was easy to follow along and really brought Meena’s story to life. Chaleeya Yeh definitely does an amazing job giving each character a distinctive voice. If you like audios and want to listen to something quick while doing chores – you should consider this!

Ok

Although I found the story good I think this was aimed at younger listeners than me . I couldn’t really connect with the characters and I found the narrator lacking she took pauses where there shouldn’t have been pauses and spoiled the book.

Exciting

This is a very enjoyable and exciting short story. The great narration really suits the characters with the narrator using different tones to differentiate each character. This is a great start to a new magical, mystery series and leaves you wanting more.

I loved the unusual and surprising way Meena’s magical skills started working.
