Very Impressive

Another amazing book written by James and he chose an incredible narrator in Adam Shults. Every short story comes a live with Adam's voice as he changes it for each story and each character. James created several scary stories in this book and I cherished each one as I listened. Another book to put on my favorite list. And best part is I could listen to each one while cooking, doing chores, writing, and on car trips to the store.

Amazing job by both the amazing author James Fuller and the magical narrator Adam Shults.

Modern, Varied, and Catchy

I first started listening not aware it was a group of short stories and I was pleasantly surprised. I normally go for longer novels, but the stories were so varied in genre and had so many lifelike qualities that they kept me listening and looking forward to the next story.
Heavy on the romantic storyline with some mystery and western and fantasy themed stories. Liked them all and would recommend them to anyone looking for a collection of short stories. Definitely worth the listen.
The voicing kept the characters alive and active and engaging. Some of the female voicing was difficult for me, but otherwise excellent.

Well worth the read!

I’ve never actually read/experienced a book for the first time in Audio format, so this was a first. What a wonderful, well-written story with vivid characters and excellent narration!

Fantastic Selection of Writing!

This book of short stories was an incredible sample of the author's excellent writing skills! And making it even better was the brilliant combination of the narrator with the stories. A perfect match for an outstanding audiobook experience.

Fantastic narration! Fantastic stories! This is one happy reader! I highly recommend the magic of listening to this on audible.

Impressive

I don't listen to a lot of Audible s, but I'm impressed. This collection of shorts was captivating and for me, it reminded me of some of SK's short stories. Fuller needs more appreciation. I believe, I'm going to find some more of his writing and give it a go. I like to be surprised, shocked, a little off kilter

Quiver Count: 0

“Broken Shards of a Masterpiece” is a small collection of stand-alone stories. That being said, it is recommended to read/listen to the stories as they are presented. My two favorites were “Judas Kiss” and “Room for Rent” as both were pretty easy to get lost in, and I wished there was more to both of them.

There was one story in particular that started out a bit rough, but I’m very glad that I stuck with it. As it was a very misleading story, and there was a twist that I did not foresee, the ending was a satisfying reward.

Something else that deserves a mention, is that the last short story was not written by Mr. Fuller, but his wife. Despite being authored by another, the story fits in, and rounds out, the entire collection. In fact, it would not be surprising to find that it’s a reader’s favorite.

Despite the brevity of these stories, Mr Fuller manages to create realistic, if gritty, settings. The characters are powerful, and they do bring out an emotion, or two, from the reader....even if it’s not necessarily a positive emotion (^.-) .

Now this part of the review is about the audio alone: Mr. Adam Shults was really hit or miss for me. There were parts where his voice really made the story come alive for me...and in other parts...not so much. It seemed like he was trying a bit too hard to add gravitas to stories that were more scenery-based. The stories that focused more on dialog were much better.

"...fraught with the blight of impatience."

**A free copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for a review.**

“Even the gods were fraught with the blight of impatience.”

This is the line, from the first story in the anthology, is the one that hooked me. Not just because it's good, but because we as readers are impatient as well from time to time. I usually don’t spend time with short stories, but this anthology scratched an itch I didn’t know I had. Not only did I enjoy this book, but it has also renewed my interest in anthologies in general.

The summary of Broken Shards of a Masterpiece says the tales are about “the fragility of perfection” and “a world shattered by obsession, intrigue, and desire.” In case the subtext wasn’t clear, these stories are dark. No one in these stories is obsessed with baking the perfect batch of chocolate chip cookies. A few of the stories involve violence, stalking, etc. If any of that is a deal-breaker, this book might not be for you. With that one caveat, I’d say this book is a solid recommendation.

The stories were varied enough to be interesting, but all had a sinister undertone. Some felt a little like Twilight Zone, some a little like Law and Order SVU, and some had a different feel altogether. Fuller has a clear voice and has a solid command of descriptions. For example, I personally couldn’t care less about cars. But when he describes the car in Ride of a Lifetime not only could I picture every detail but I also could understand why someone would appreciate a car so much. Other details, like the particulars of what a stalker does outside his target’s apartment building, disgusted me. This, of course, was Fuller's intention.

I enjoyed Broken Shards of a Masterpiece, and will be adding James Fuller’s other works to my To Be Read list. While I enjoyed the audiobook, at the time of this review the book is available on Kindle Unlimited. If you’re not turned off by the explicit nature of the stories, this is an anthology I’d recommend. I give it a 4.5/5. Because we all must pursue perfection.

Twist and turns everywhere you look.

This book had tons of different stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat and often wondering what will happen next! Great listen as well, enjoyed the voice actor who narrated this book. His talent at changing his voice for each short story was just what this book needed.

Succesful Experiment

I wanted to give audiobooks a try and see if I can finally focus on audiobooks. I can't longterm, but this book sure made me want to try!
Despite the use of a few too many -ly words, the stories are,for the most part, interesting, thrilling and has some good twists, particularly the first few.
And then there's the voice! That man is brilliant. He does various voices, including between gender and with accent. I love it. Should I want to listen to more audiobooks, I'll look up what else he has done
