The first great war of Ovira is over, and the most hated king in centuries is dead, but his nephew still lives. However, Basen had nothing to do with the destructive war his uncle started. In fact it was his uncle who exiled him and his father to the territory of their enemies, where Basen's dreams of becoming a legendary mage now fade, as he must work all day just to eat. His only chance at regaining some semblance of the life he thought he would lead is to join an elite school that trains, houses, and feeds a thousand new young men and women each year.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

fantastic series
I am a huge fan of Mr. Narro. I have read all of his books except for the stalwart series which I am currently reading. I have nothing but positive things to say about this series the plot and character development is amazing. With each book I finish I can not wait to start the next. I highly recommend any of Narro's series you will not be disappointed!!!

Slow and Plodding Plot
I won't be listening to anymore of these. Mainly it is how slow the plot moves. The books are short at only 10 hours so when you combine that with a slow moving plot nothing seems to happen. Slow plots are fine with a book that goes 25-30 hours but not here. It is almost like you have only read a chapter then you have to buy the next chapter.
Other problems is that the magic is lame and seems almost useless. In fact the boys learn the basic in a night, then go to magic school for three years and really don't know anything additional. And that is not an exaggeration.
All in all, this is a series to skip.

Second in the series and another success!
Listened every chance I got. I'll get the next on release day! Narration was a little better to handle this go around. It took me about 2/3 of the first book to get used to Simon Vance. It's a personal struggle for me with every new book to get a feel of how the narrator envisions the author through tone, impersonation, and other elements. Much better for me this go around

Again... skips MAJOR plot lines
This writer is VERY good at writing dialogs but skips over the story as if he's already tired of writing it...
Literally in about 4 sentences, the two main characters enter a world that should be a major plot line, to having finished 4 years training, and are off to a battle... An entire book could have been written about the change in their lives during training, but it was skipped over... Then... They go into a battle where there is more time spent over a confrontation with a superior than on the actual point of the battle, and what was happening...
Probably going to return book 1 and 2.

Long winded and boring.
Not much exciting every happens, lazy writing plagues this book. I was hoping for a medieval action packed novel and recieved a delicate love story that bored me to death for 20 hours. Performance was great but, I couldn't get over the slow pace and flat climax of each book.

A good read, but it’s very short
The plot of this second book in the series was more polished than the first book. I enjoyed this a great deal, but am a bit annoyed that the book is so short. I completed the book in one day & im hungry for more. I normally don’t purchase audible books that are only a few hours in length like this & the other books in the series. However, it was a good read & I recommend it the story.

yep. liked this story and it's pace. as usual Mr Vance tells it the way I like it. Although I usually listen a story at 1.10 and even quicker if a chapter is exciting. more interesting things happened in the second book. do wish the books were longer. I recommend waiting for the complete series before starting.
