A "prehistorical-fiction" novel about a boy prodigy in a primitive caveman society. First he reduces a dislocation of his own finger, then works out how to "set bones" for others who’re injured. Like Jean Auel's Ayla, he discovers other primitive technologies, including trapping, smoking meat, and the domestication of a wolf. His mastery of these skills gradually elevates his previously despised and downtrodden position in their society - until he becomes highly respected and admired. And, falls in love with the girl he didn’t dream could love him back....

I enjoyed the storyline, the character arc, and look forward to the next books in the series. Good narration too.

Loved it!

I had to replay the last 30 minutes. I thought maybe I'd missed something, but I hadn't. Suddenly (and I mean suddenly), two protagonists appear, the girl falls in love with the boy, and everything is hunky dory. It's almost as if Laury had reached his target word count and finished the developing story in three paragraphs. Or, he just ran out of enthusiasm. (Maybe his keyboard froze up?) However, apart from the last page or two, I found the story interesting and arresting.

I've read the Hyllis Family saga and ALL of the Ell Donsaii books. That's a lot of reading, but this is the first time I've been disappointed.

What a curtailed end

Dr. Dahners certainly knows how to tell a good story. This was the last series of his that I actually read, as I didn't originally find the blurb intriguing. This first story is set in prehistorical times and follows the adventures of Pel, a young and physically awkward teen. He is cast out of his tribe, a sure death sentence. Through ingenuity, he is able to survive. I love dogs, so his relationship with Ginja really stood out for me.

The narrator does a very good job on this one. I'm looking forward to experiencing the rest of the series in audio.

An excellent historical fiction adventure

This book's plot is not complex but it is a refreshing story that is well told and well narrated. I hope more in this series arrives soon! ~ JTC ~

Loved this book. MORE PLEASE!

This book may not be 100% historically accurate but it has great characters, a plot that moves along nicely, and it's full of thought provoking ideas. As soon as I finished it, I immediately went back to the beginning and listened again. I only seem to do that with Laurence Dahners's excellent books! I highly recommend this book and all his other books as well.

Great book!
