Publisher's summary

A fabulous fantasy adventure, this trilogy is based on Chinese mythology, and is set in modern-day Hong Kong, where an ancient god falls in love with a young Australian woman...

Martial arts, magic, demons and science, the forces of Hell are poised to strike...

When Emma's relatives come to visit her, they are totally freaked out by what they learn Emma's beloved, John Chen, is a 3,000 year old Chinese god. Not only that, John is becoming weaker by the day. Demons pursue him relentlessly, hoping to use Emma, and his child, Simone, as bargaining tools against him.

Emma battles to defend Simone as John's energy is drained by the effort of both living in the mortal world and protecting them. While Emma is nagged by doubts about her own nature, she must find the courage to go on...

Good but sad and slightly frustrating

Emma continues to struggle with understanding her nature. John keeps being too optimistic and it turns out badly. Everyone keeps trying to sacrifice themselves to save the others, which I found a bit annoying. But overall, I love the world, and I love the characters. They just seemed a bit unprepared and could have been more proactive sometimes.

Bring on the rest

I love everything about this series. Need to have the rest realised on Audible so I can share this with my son, who was born blind. He has loved the first three and is eagerly awaiting the remaining stories.

Excellent telling of an excellent story.

Just finishing listening to the last book in this series and devo to learn the next trilogy isn't available yet! Excellent performance of one of my favourite book series that I keep returning to. It was excellent to hear an Australian narrator take on such a vast cast of characters and absolutely slay it, giving everyone a different sound, brining them to life. I really hope the second trilogy is getting worked on RIGHT NOW with the same narrator so we can see the story continued. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen!

This story drew me in over the 3 books

I read the first 2 books in this trilogy via Kindle and listened to the 3rd via Audible. I rarely read books from this genre so it took me a little while to get into the 1st book. But by the end of the 1st book, I wanted to read more. The characters are engaging and the story done in an original way, combining both Australian and Chinese cultures and traditions into a very enjoyable read (Chinese demons apparently love peanut butter!). It was a great distraction during lockdown. I look forward to reading more books by Kylie Chan!

Great story. But irritating writing style.

I really got sucked into this series and, despite my distaste for the author's style, I struggled through. The phrases "...face went rigid with..." and "I ran my hands through my hair" crop up with monotonous regularity. The protagonist is self-righteous, annoying and self-deprecating to the point of ridiculousness and this behaviour is enabled by those around her. Worth a listen but don't expect high quality prose.
