Beatrix Rose & John Milton - the early years
- By Wayne on 03-02-18
By: Mark Dawson
Publisher's Summary
Mark Dawson (author of the best-selling John Milton series) continues the action-packed quest for revenge begun by Beatrix Rose in In Cold Blood.
Ten years ago, Beatrix Rose headed an off-the-books hit squad that did the dirty work of the British Government. When she discovered that the commander of the squad was corrupt, he sent five of his assassins to rub her out.
But they failed. Bad mistake.
There were six names on Beatrix's Death List, and now there are four. She's going to account for the others, one by one, even if it kills her.
Beatrix has returned from Somalia with a fresh target in her sights. Bryan Duffy is in Iraq, surrounded by mercenaries, with no easy way to get to him and no easy way to get out.
Will Duffy prove to be a challenge too far?
Fans of In Cold Blood will know all about the unlimited action, but until you've listened to Blood Moon Rising, you'll only know one third of the story!

Loved Blood Moon Rising
This is the second Audible book I've listen to ofMark Dawson's. As with the first book I've given it five stars. A fabulous listening story. I listen to audio books on my daily walks and Mark Dawson's books make my walk go past so quickly that I don't even notice that I've walked for over 2 hours. Just wish they were a bit longer. But fantastic all the same. Highly recommended.

Awesome audio book .
Would you consider the audio edition of Blood Moon Rising to be better than the print version?
Yes the audio version makes you feel like you were right with Beatrix.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood Moon Rising?
How she helped the brother and sister get to a safe place/
What does Mark Deakins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He makes you feel like your right there.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes it made me cry when she hugged the brother and sister goodbye before they went to their relatives.
Any additional comments?
This is the first book I have listened to and will now be looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Also this book stands alone so you can read the series out of order.

Wonderful espionage thriller in a wonderful series
Those who like espionage thrillers should listen to Mark Dawson's novels. My favorite Dawson series is Beatrix Rose. In Blood moon rising ex-British espionage agent is getting some revenge as she dies of terminal cancer. She is also teaching her teen daughter Isabella how to protect herself after she (Beatrix) dies. Action is constant and suspense is extreme in the four novels in this series. Mark Deakins' narration is pitch perfect.

Another great read from the Beatrix Rose series..
So, Beatrix is getting sicker and sicker. If she doesn’t quit now I’m just not going to believe it. She killed another off her kill list and I think she’s about to get #5 as she heads home at the end of this book. That will only leave #6, Control, and I don’t think she’ll be able to get him so that’ll be up to Isabella, when she gets older. But not much older because she’s only 15 when HER series begins and she can kick some butt as well as her mother. Beatrix was a very good teacher. So, I’ve already bought the last book in this series so I’d better get to it. No romance and the F-bomb was used 11 times. As to the narration: Mark Deakins does a fine job on the voices. Yeah, his women’s voices could use some work BUT as I always say, “better a female with a deeper voice than a man with the voice of a girl.” A perfect example is the Beatrix Rose’s The Hong Kong Stories narrated by Jane Slavin. There are men talking in the audible sample and they sound just like women. So, I won’t be getting that 3 book set. Too bad about that.

Good Story, but...
I continue to think Mark Deakins and Mark Dawson are both awesome. The story was really good, but Beatrix Rose was rather annoying in this particular book. She is super-stubborn and is willing to put others’ lives at risk all in the name of revenge. I still rate it 5 stars.

I'm hooked!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Recommend a read/listen of "In Cold Blood" first and get a more thorough insight into the series. The background is in this book, so not necessary, but I'm glad I read/listened to In Cold Blood first
What did you like best about this story?
I thought Beatrix was in a tight spot with no feasible escape without some farfetched action by which she overcomes insurmountable odds and, once again, the author comes up with a highly plausible scenario to even the chance for escape.
Which character – as performed by Mark Deakins – was your favorite?
I liked Mark performing as the villain, Number 10, when I listened to In Cold Blood. This time as one of the good guys, the new Control, Pope, was my favorite.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Iraq - all about oil - a thrilling aside
Any additional comments?
I listened to the first of the series; bought the series and read/listened to the second now I will read/listen to the third. Yes, I'm hooked on Beatrix Rose.

Dig two graves
Another short novel, number 2 in the Beatrix Rose revenge series.
Entertaining throughout, well narrated, although I would perhaps prefer an english accent given that Beatrix is a British agent, having said that the story is compelling and vibrant.
My only criticism is the dialogue between Beatrix and Isabella. Until Isabella was identified as 13 years old I would have placed as being about seven by the manner in which she was presented.
I’m looking forward to the next and final instalment.

A bit short
These Beatrix Rose books are pretty good popular thrillers, but very short compared to other books. She has a hit list of 6 and the writer has split each "hit" into a separate book. They should really be in one log book.

Gripping, but a bit bloodthirsty
Would you consider the audio edition of Blood Moon Rising to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print edition of this book, but having read several other books by Mr Dawson, and as this is an unabridged version, that there is very little to choose between them. Having an audio book is an unusual treat for me as I normally read the print/kindle versions of books.
What other book might you compare Blood Moon Rising to, and why?
In some ways the heroine (Beatrix Rose) is rather like a female Jack Reacher in the Lee Child books. She is also a very highly trained agent/soldier and the books are similarly bloodthirsty.
What aspect of Mark Deakins’s performance might you have changed?
The performance overall was rather mono-tonal, and the excitement of certain key passages wasn't really portrayed in his performance
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
They upset this loving mother, now they must pay, four down, two to go by the end.
Any additional comments?
an excellent story, as usual from Mark Dawson, rather more bloodthirsty than his John Milton stories. Slightly let down by a narration that was a little flat in my opinion.

Heart Stopping
What did you like most about Blood Moon Rising?
The fast paced story and accuracy of the people and places.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood Moon Rising?
The rescue of the boy from prison in Iraq.
Have you listened to any of Mark Deakins’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes. The previous novel in this series. Well read again..
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes but at 5 hours + I listened in chunks of about an hour.
Any additional comments?
I thought that the previous Beatrix Rose outing was good but this is better. A fast moving plot with action from the beginning. It is a great story with a knowledge of places and culture that I would previously not been interested in. It had heart stopping excitement where you thought that the heroine would not complete her task.. I really enjoyed this story and hope to buy more from this author.

3 part book, separated for more money
I am enjoying the story but it is far too short for the money, all 3 parts together are still shorter than many books I've bought. Shame on you Audible

two roses for Beatrix
Beatrix Rose continues her vendetta against those the six who , years previously, killed her husband and stole her daughter. Finally reunited with he and with time rapidly running out, BeTrix needs to keep her safe and that can only be achieved if her betrayers are dead.
Although a story of an assassin on the hunt, it is also tender and thoughtful, beautifully crafted by the talented Mark Dawson. The narration I matches the novel's pace well and the vocalisation of the dialogue is excellent helping to bring the characters vividly to life.
This is the second of Mark Dawson's excellent Beatrix Rose trilogy, fast, thrilling and often unexpected. Best to read the first volume before this one but not essential, I can recommend it without reservation -buy it, listen and enjoy.

***Blood Moon Rising***
I love Beatrix Rose I can't get enough of her, it's just a shame that she is very sick. This book kept me breathless in anticipation from beginning to end. It's action packed, fast paced and incredibly absorbing listening is a must. The narrative is excellent.
