Acerca de esta escucha
The fourth, ground-breaking mystery featuring African-American maid and amateur sleuth Blanche White by Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Award winning author Barbara Neely.
Blanche White returns to Farleigh, North Carolina for the summer to help her best friend with her catering business. It's a homecoming rich with the potential for new romance and fraught with the pain of facing the man who raped her at knife-point years ago but was never prosecuted for the crime. Shortly after Blanche arrives, a young woman is murdered and the clues point to the rapist. Blanche investigates, determined not to let him get away with another crime...nor is she willing to let his money-hungry sister marry a sweet, mentally-challenged man for his wealth. With her usual persistence, feisty wit, and indomitable spirit, her quest for the truth reveals the racism and sexism that still permeate the new south, but also the conflicts that divide her own family...and that might prevent her from accepting the love she so richly deserves.

Halia Watkins has her hands full cooking, hosting, and keeping her boisterous young cousin, Wavonne, from getting too sassy with customers. Having fast-talking entrepreneur Marcus Rand turn up in her kitchen is annoying enough when he's alive - but finding his dead body face-down on her ceramic tile after hours is much worse. Marcus had his enemies, and the cast iron frying pan beside his corpse suggests that at last, his shady business deals went too far. Halia is desperate to keep Sweet Tea's name out of the sordid spotlight but her efforts only make Wavonne a prime suspect.

Pleasantly surprised
I thought I might be starting a light murder mystery when I downloaded this book. But I got much more than that. I'm so grateful the author didn't tiptoe around important difficult issues. She deftly integrated those topics into the storyline. I'm looking forward to reading & listening more from this author.

Inspiring!!
I loved this book. It touches sensitive topics with such delicate honesty and bravery. There’s a huge message in the end and I liked how Blanche saw herself and other women in a deeper more understanding light than in the beginning

Thank you Barbara Neely
Blanche is a reassuring complicated likable main character who always seems to fall into a mystery for the people that she works for as a day cleaner from the Carolinas who is raising two kids by her dead sister. A glimpse into her on traditional spiritual life after being raised in the Bible belt gives me hope for reconnection to my ancestors.

Never Better
Barbara Neely never disappointed. She was a master revealing the humanity in her characters and signs of the times in all of her books.
Ms. Neely passed in 2020, I believe. She was a great writer and human being. I really wish we could have more of Blanche and the next chapters of her life.

Wonderful rich and complex
Loved this book and its in depth exploration of the conjunction of Blanche’s inner life and the impacts of racism and slavery as well as being a single woman. Blanche is such a wonderful character. I am so sad that this is the last in the series. Narration also outstanding.
