Publisher's Summary

Rebus is juggling four cases trying to nail one killer - who might just lead back to the infamous Bible John. And he's doing it under the scrutiny of an internal inquiry led by a man he has just accused of taking backhanders from Glasgow's Mr Big.

As if this wasn't enough, there are TV cameras at his back investigating a miscarriage of justice, making Rebus a criminal in the eyes of a million or more viewers. Just one mistake is likely to mean an unpleasant and not particularly speedy death or, worse still, losing his job.

Features a new introduction narrated by Ian himself.

Many characters. Complex plot.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, easy to listen to and very well narrated/performed.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It kept me interested. I wouldn't say the edge of my seat though.

What about James Macpherson’s performance did you like?

Fabulous. One listens to the story and forgets that it is just one person reading. Every character has a different voice and they are all recognizable. He even maintains the characters through the other books. Wonderful!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'd say two. It is long.

Any additional comments?

Be warned it is a complex plot with a LOT of different characters. One does have to really pay attention to names and occupation of the characters in order to follow the story.

Favourite Rankin book so far.

So I started reading this series from the beginning I.e. Knots & Crosses and couldn't see what all the fuss was about. But Black & Blue didn't disappoint. Lots of action, twists and turns. It was useful to have back story on some of the characters. I sometimes find it hard to keep up with all the different characters that Ian Rankin introduces, but like a ball of tangled wool it unravels towards the end of the book, as all becomes clear. I like James Mcpherson's narration and he makes listening a pleasure. Looking forward to reading the rest of the Rebus books.

Fascinating-----riveting

Having lived through the Bible John saga etc. there were answers proffered and even more lanes to go up.
Have promised myself to start it all again at the beginning to savour all the bits I'm sure I missed

Excellent story. Excellent narrator.

Classic Rebus audiobook. Multiple story lines and as always the narrator was just spot on

Rebus

Not as fine as later novels in the Rebus series but a good read.
Major error by narrator was to read the Shetland characters with Western Isles accents - toe curlingly awful error which spoilt those sections in the story.

A scenario to far

I like twists and turns and dastardly villains that's why I read Ian Rankin, but this was just pushing the plot envelope a wee bit to far.

Good however a little disjointed at times

I thought the overall performance from the narrator was excellent. I did have a few problems with the logical consistency of the plot. However overall I enjoyed the audiobook and think a second listen will make everything clearer for me.

Narrator Poor

Love Ian Rankin books, but unfortunately the voice doesn’t do them justice in my opinion. I suppose we all have a different voice in our heads when reading. Rebus definitely didn’t sound like this in mine.

Good story

enjoyed this book; clever how one real life story was intertwined with the fictional one. I am fairly new to 'Rebus' and have only read a few of his later books so it was interesting to get some earlier backstory. Narration is as always excellent.

Jumped around

Enjoyed the book, although sometimes couldn't understand how the main character ended up in a new situation with little explanation. Excellent narration.

Brilliant and Engaging

Best in the series of Rebus so far and I am listening to the books in sequence over the last couple of months. This book is more sophisticated in terms of plot and sure footed in terms of character and narrative.
Also, James MacPherson is absolutely brilliant in bringing these books to life. A great narrator is so important with an audio books and MacPherson is exceptional. Rebus is a great character and one of the iconic fictional detectives that all lovers of murder mysteries should discover and these audio books are a great way to do so.
