Publisher's summary

A disused London Underground lift goes way beyond the bottom floor. A psychic boy discovers what terrors are buried in the fallow field. A handshake seals a midnight fate in an old farming dispute. A corpse must be buried by dawn.

Black Gate Tales: Fourteen short stories of dread, hope, death, and wonder.

"Unnerving, beautifully dark and twisted prose...a refreshing but classic voice in horror and fantasy. Much like the rabbit hole, you never know where Paul Draper’s tales will take you and you’re never disappointed." (H.G. Rexon, author of Between the Fog and Shadows: A Historical Fantasy)

"A terrific collection, consistently well-written and full of light, clever touches." (Rober Grossmith, author of The Empire of Lights)

Beautifully morose short stories

I love finding a book of short stories that is able to envelopes you into a story that is only 10 minutes long. Black Gate Tales is one of those books. Each story is beautifully morose and some are delightfully uncomfortable. I listen to half on Christmas Eve and half on Christmas, both right before bed and connected to many of the melancholy tales. We are in the second year of the pandemic and there are no rooms full of children and grandchildren to bring havoc and joy to my home. The whispers of the wind matched the whispery smooth but crisp narration.
This is a lovely book of sadness with a small sprinkle of hope.
