Since Merit was turned into a vampire and the protector of Chicago's Cadogan House, it's been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan's vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead...or both. Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal-registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay for a bit, and let the mortals calm down. But that's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black - and things really start getting ugly.

Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene - and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

"Vampires in Chicago! You'd think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, 10 months later, we're enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite - fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross- and stake-wielding slayers. Don't get me wrong. Joe Public isn't exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven't stormed the castle...yet."

Publisher's Summary
Merit has been a vampire for only a short while, but she's already seen a lifetime's worth of trouble. She and her Master, centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, have risked their lives time and again to save the city they love. But not all of Chicago is loving them back. Anti-vampire riots are erupting all over town, striking vampires where it hurts the most.
A splinter group armed with Molotov cocktails and deep-seated hate is intent on clearing the fanged from the Windy City come hell or high water. Merit and her allies rush to figure out who's behind the attacks, who will be targeted next, and whether there's any way to stop the wanton destruction. The battle for Chicago is just beginning, and Merit is running out of time.

Biting Bad/Tastes and Sounds Delicious
Being a huge fan of Chicagoland Vampire books, this book was greatly anticipated. And, it does not disappoint. The story is well thought out, the characters (who by now are old friends) are fun to reconnect with, the writing is crisp and strong and Ms Neill's voice becomes more clear and effective with each successive book. Sophie Eastlake's performance is SPOT-ON!! She delivers a great and masterful interpretation of the dialogue; her voices match the characters (she does a damn good Ethan) and the intonation/inflection certainly indicates that she didn't just pick this book up and start reading it out loud. The relationship between Ethan and Merit continues to evolve and Ms. Eastlake's reading of them reflects exactly that. Of course, the read is contingent on the writing and Ms. Neill is getting stronger with every book. I sure hope the next one is out soon and that Ms Eastlake is once again in the driver's seat as the performer. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I love these stupid books.
I have a Master's degree in English Literature. I am also eight books into this series and have no intention of stopping. Do they make me cringe sometimes? Yes. Do I want to replace her editor, who apparently cannot pick up on repetition of words and phrases within the same paragraph? Absolutely. Do I occasionally skip forward through the sex scenes because I just cannot deal with the incredibly purple prose? Definitely.
All of that said, I am riveted by all of these attractive vampires and their problems. I've read similar series: Laurel K Hamilton and the Sookie Stackhouse novels, for example, but they always jump the shark (wereshark?) and lose me along the line. These books manage to keep all of the intrigue and sex appeal of the supernatural world without drifting into the ridiculous or the masturbatory. Neill has a real gift for coming up with plausible mysteries that are compelling without making you roll your eyes at them. Her bad guys are bad without being absurd and her good guys are good without being too perfect. It's clear that she goes into each book with a solid idea instead of just the desire for another paycheck.
Another thing she does well is actually produce likable characters instead of just deciding who the 'good guys' are and telling you to like them.

Love this series!!!!!
Not so much the narration but I am still hooked on the first narrator for this series. I am getting used to the change but it's a real pity to have to. I think it should be a rule that if you start narrating a series you keep at it (unless you are voted as real crap) The story line is chugging along nicely. Not real explosive this time but a carry-on in the story..waiting on the next installment.....

I forgot how much I love this series. I am glad I added this to my list of series I wanted to complete this year and the fact that you can pick up where you left off is wonderful. This author gives us just enough detail to not over whelm each book but just enough so you remember past books. Merit and Ethan are awesome in this book and the relationship is stronger than it ever has been. Vampire politics have a big ol’ part of this book. I have to wonder at Merit’s fathers involvement and if Ethan will allow it. The fact that Molotov Cocktails were involved in this book you know for dang sure Merit kicked some booty. The Ending … So sweet <3 Loved the narration as always Sophie is a favorite of mine.

Still digging series
I’ve read most of this series & now listening to it... the characters are well written (I did see where the complaints on some review on Merritt being put on her butt ... but there was a plausible reason) ... action packed story lines that still keep me interest. I have no problem with the reader’s voice or the way she reads. I listen to 3 books a week while I work ... has anyone ever noticed that various characters voices are in other books... must be a set sound effect ... just thought it was interesting

Its Late, But Its Getting Better!!
When I started this series I wasn't a big fan, and I don't think I am now. But the series is getting better and better in my opinion and lately I have started to enjoy listening to it rather than forcing myself to finish it.
A lot of changes happen when you compare it to the first few books and I like that, and few twists here and there which i didn't expect at all.. And I always like that.
it was a good read.

I've hit a wall
Unfortunately, I have to stop listening at chapter 10. I'm lost, can't pay attention and keep the story straight with the new narrator. I will attempt to finish the series reading it, but it's not likely since I don't have time to get significant amounts of reading done. There are a lot of books left, it could take me a very long time. Audible allows me to multitask and listen.
