Publisher's summary

Being a faerie princess isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Ivy must go to Faerie, but the gateway to the Wisp Court is through Tech Duinn, the house of Donn - Celtic god of the dead. Just her luck.

Unable to share her secret with Jinx, and with Jenna called away on Hunters' Guild business, Ivy must rely on Ceff and Torn to lead her to Death's door, literally, and back again. As if that wasn't dangerous enough, there's no saying what horrors lay in store within the Faerie realm. Too bad the Wisp Court is the one lead Ivy has in the search for her father - and possible salvation.

Maybe hiding away and dodging sidhe assassins isn't so bad after all.

Birthright is the fourth full-length novel in the award-winning Ivy Granger urban fantasy series by E.J. Stevens. The world of Ivy Granger, including the Ivy Granger Psychic Detective series and Hunters' Guild series, is filled with action, paranormal mystery, magic, dark humor, quirky characters, bloodsucking vampires, flirtatious demons, sarcastic gargoyles, sexy shifters, temperamental witches, psychotic faeries, and snarky, kick-butt heroines.

Good story

I started this series with book 4. I feel that i missed a lot but the story line was pretty good. It is about Ivy Granger who solves cases with her friend. She is half wispTand half human.

The main part of the story is she goes to Faerie along with her fiance, Ceff who is the king of the Kelpies and Thorn who is a cat Sidhe and a brownie named Skilly. She goes to Fairie to find out about her father and her to get information to try to stop assassination attempts by the Unseelie.

She meets her uncle, Cade, and he teaches her about her powers. Meanwhile, Ceff and Thorn disappear along with the adder stone of her people. It appears they left and stole the stone. However, all is not what it seems. There is secrets about her birthright as princess of the wisp.

She looks and looks for her friends but cannot find them. Finally after a long time in Fairie she decides to continue her learning and embrace her role. After a bad day in the court she and Skilly find a hallway she has not seen before. They find here uncles room and it has hidden passageway. Once they down the passageway they discover a hidden dungeon and then all secrets come to light.

Five Incredible Stars!

Wow, what an entertaining story!

I really enjoyed this audiobook and performance; however, because I didn't listen to the first three stories in the series, I felt I was missing some details BUT this did not in anyway impact my rating. Birthright does provide enough information, back details, and is such an intriguing story, with a plot that really drew me in. I didn't feel lost, but do think the plot would have been much richer if read in order.

This was certainly a fast paced story, full suspense, action, some romance and great character development. I really liked Ivy!

Melanie and Anthony provided an excellent performance which enhanced the overall audiobook experience! They really brought the characters to life.

Overall, this was a fantastic, and I'm going to have to go back, and listen to the prior stories!

supporting characters were simply amazing

Birthright is the fourth book in a series called Ivy Granger Psychic Detective by E.J. Granger. Ivy Granger is a private detective in the world of the supernatural. Having recently discovered her non-human parentage, she is desperate to find out information about her father. She is also presumed dead as the bounty hunters who had hunted her for her inability to control her powers and jeopardize the secrecy of the supernatural world think that they succeeded. But to learn about her powers, and find out more about her father, she needs to enter the Faerie world, learn to use her powers, and then convince those that want her dead that she can control her powers.  On this quest, Ivy hopes to enter and return from the Faerie world safely with her friends, be acquitted, and hopefully find out some information about her father.

As this is the fourth book in a series, it would have been helpful to read the previous novels to fully understand the background of the characters, their relationships, and to truly become emotionally invested in the events unfolding. This story is essentially a quest. Ivy and a group of her supporters set off on an adventure. Luckily, Granger does an excellent job covering all the important plot points to prevent readers from getting lost. In general, I thought this was a great story and hints at a well-developed world. The supporting characters were simply amazing and clearly well fleshed out. The end had a great emotional payoff, however, I did find the motives to the villain to be a little weak and often I was really frustrated with Ivy’s actions. I just felt as if she was set up as being stronger than she ended up actually being. Also, there is a portion of time where a large amount of time passes, and Granger did a good job with that without making the story feel like it was dragging. Overall, while I enjoyed this book, I would highly recommend reading the previous novels before this one to get the full effect.

The narration by Melanie A. Mason and Anthony Bowling was well done. I don’t typically love having two different narrators for different genders, but each did a good job with their narrations.  All of the characters were distinguishable and definitely had their own personality that was supported by the narration. The production quality was also good. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes urban fantasy novels.

Great Urban Fantasy Story About Ivy Granger

Birthright is the 4th book in the Ivy Granger series. I have not read the first 3 but I really enjoyed this one.

Ivy is a great character and it is easy to get sucked into this story. All characters are well developed and easy to follow.

I like having 2 narrators. It makes it a nice addition to the listening experience. You will find mystery, suspense, action, and romance in this book. And some betrayal as well... It is quite entertaining!

This book is very well written with a great heroine. I'm going to look for the previous 3 and listen to them as well.

will have readers panting for the next book.

AudioBook Review:
Overall: Stars: 4 Narration 4 Story 4

Firstly – you should start this series from the beginning – each new book builds on the last, and you would be wondering just where this or that element came from. For those who have read the earlier books in the series, this picks up after the events in book three, Burning Bright, and poor Ivy is right in the mix.

By this point, we know that Ivy is able to ‘feel’ others, and is determined to ferret out the abnormal events happening in Harborsmouth. To that end, she has, with her best friend Jinx, opened a detective agency. With multiple issues happening here, there and everywhere, Ivy is constantly struggling to find a balance between her life, her newly discovered genetics, her boyfriend and her best friend.

Now with one answer to her many questions, Ivy needs to rely on Ceff (her boyfriend – a Kelpie King) and Torn (a cat shifter) as she wants to discover more about her father. She’s only just discovered her half-fairy heritage, and with someone still seeking to do her harm, she’s got to make these discoveries without sharing her ‘back from the dead’ status. But, as it always is, nothing is easy for Ivy – and with a new demon to defeat, an uncle who just may be plotting against the kingdom and a plot that is far more dangerous than she ever expected – the action just keeps on coming.

Ivy and her friends are well developed and likable, and with each book they seem to grow more distinct and confident as they accept their own powers and find confidence in successes. Even if those successes are often more a result of luck than actual skill. World building for the series is solid and intriguing, and with each new dimension that opens up, the world is unique and fresh. This book is full of action, angst and several moments for sadness –but fits solidly into the collection and will have readers panting for the next book.

Narration for this story is provided by Melanie A. Mason and Anthony Bowling, and they both presented and enhanced the story. With subtle differentiation in tone, delivery and pitch, the characters were presented as distinct individuals while subtle pauses, pacing changes and emotional overtones added to the story giving readers additional audible input to increases in action, danger or emotion. The narration allowed me to get lost in the story and moments, seeing and experiencing events as Ivy did, although without the mortal danger.

So Good!

Great story and narration!

Ivy and company are back and up to more mayhem! wisps are running amuck and Ivy's only recourse is to go to the Faerie realm and claim her birthright. Unfortunately the way is fraught with peril.

If you liked the rest of the series then you will love this one too!

Fun and Exciting

What made the experience of listening to Birthright the most enjoyable?

I really liked the characters and loved listening to this book.

What other book might you compare Birthright to and why?

There are many books that are paranormal romance, some of my favorites are the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole, Thea Harrison's books, as well as J.R Ward and Kerrlyn Sparks. All these authors add myths and magic to modern day settings and make alternate worlds which show how these creatures adapt with the centuries and shows you their hidden worlds.

Which character – as performed by Melanie A. Mason and Anthony Bowling – was your favorite?

I liked the little demon, he was super cute, other than that it was the main female character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Girl is a princess of her people, she is forced to fight for her life and goes on a journey to fairy to try to visit her father's land.

An Entertaining Listen

I am a late comer to the Ivy Granger series of novels. I was able to enjoy book four without having read the previous books, but there were things that I think I would have understood much better if I had read the other books. If you like the urban fantasy genre then you should like Ivy Granger. I personally have no specific complaints about book four. I enjoyed it. It just didn’t move me as passionately as the vast amount super positive of reviews out there suggest it should have.

this story tails off

it starts off quite well but rushes to finish as if the author got fed up half way through.
the incidental sound effects, changes of voice are off putting
Frankly it is not a patch on the previous books. Disappointing overall

Enjoyable instalment of this series

I have read/listened to some of the earlier books in this series, but not the previous two and was thus pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to jump back into the series. While things have changed quite drastically for Ivy, these changes are readily covered in passing in this new book and do not detract from my enjoyment of this instalment, which is a credit to the author as getting the balance of progression and accessibility right is a tricky task the more books there are in a particular series.

The narration helps to enhance the listener's enjoyment of this book, with suitably distinctive tones to cover an extensive cast and pleasant tones to ensure that it is not tiring to the listener.

Overall, this was an enjoyable instalment in this series and I will be looking out for subsequent ones and returning to those earlier ones I have missed out on previously.

Birthright: Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective

What did you like most about Birthright?
There was so so much in this story ,especially as this is my second time listening to it.However a favorite part was what Ivy did in Tech Duinn, the house of Donn - Celtic god of the dead and what she learned there and who she met I am sure you will see the irony at the end of the book but by that time I can pretty much guarantee you will be in complete shock!
What does Melanie A. Mason and Anthony Bowling bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The book itself is amazing but as much as I love the feel of paper and the smell of the pages I always prefer audio performances .The narration by Melanie A. Mason and Anthony Bowling was very good. they have a huge range of voices at their disposal and they give a real acting performance and I am sure Stevens would think it a worthy realisation of her prose.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was and they all are,I recently was given a copy of book 5 "Hound's Bite"so I listened to the whole series again and love it all the more. What E.J. Stevens did with that phenomenal ending that had me smiling ear-to-ear and teary-eyed at its sheer perfection. It was totally worth every time I cried and sobbed and went crazy over her devastating story got at times and gave me a solace of utter joy. Happiness is not a good enough word to describe what I was feeling when they were reunited. You will be in for a huge shock in this book! One that I did not see coming until a subtle trail of bread crumbs was dropped in the last half of the book.Creative writing wizardry!
