For the town of Larch Pine, the annual Fourth of July picnic is a noisy celebration of defiance against the dark, oppressive forest that hems them in. But the woods have their own traditions. The locals whisper tales of the "Shadow on the Ridge" , a story used to keep people from wandering too far from the trail.

This year, the story becomes a terrifying reality.

When a six-year-old boy vanishes during a game of hide-and-seek , only his frantic mother and a weathered park ranger sense the true danger that has been awakened. The town's authorities, blinded by denial, dismiss their fears as panic and hysteria .

As teenagers plan a secret trek into the woods and drunken revelers ignore the ranger's warnings, the simmering dread explodes into a full-scale assault. An ancient predator, intelligent and brutal, steps from the shadows to turn the festive park into a hunting ground . The celebration becomes a slaughter.

Now, a handful of survivors must fight their way through fire, chaos, and a monster that is more than just a myth. It's a bloody, brutal reality, and it will stop at nothing to protect its territory.

Fun short story.

This was a fun short story. I enjoyed the twist on the classic Bigfoot that made him a monster. Wish they had someone reading it though. The AI voice was rough.

Make it make sense!

I’ve read several stories by this author. This one starts out fine but the second half makes no sense. The choices made are devoid of logic. While the technical part of the writing is fine, the story line seems like a drunken mess of ends not meeting. I don’t need books to bring anger and annoyance into my life. Worst story I’ve read out of 5 of his offerings.
