Acerca de esta escucha

A Second Chance at Life: On the sunny morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, terrorists murdered more than 2,700 people in an attack on New York City. Thousands died when a hijacked Boeing 767 slammed into Tower One of the World Trade Center. It was first blood. For Leslie Haskin, it was a second chance at life. This is the riveting account of Leslie's harrowing escape - down 36 floors in a doomed and dying building and away from a life focused on perks, prestige, and power. The intervening months brought crippling mental and emotional distress, but from the rubble and ashes, the corporate climber rediscovered the faith of her childhood and now embraces a new life of serving others.

Amazing Story

What did you love best about Between Heaven and Ground Zero?

Hearing the intensity, the emotion and the power of the author's voice as she read her own words conveyed the feeling and immenseness of this woman's struggle to survive and to come to terms with the tragedy and find meaning. Her spiritual growth was evident and it felt real and empowering to me to hear it as she healed and found her way out of the trauma of victimhood.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Between Heaven and Ground Zero?

The poem she read 10-0 was poignant and powerful, conveying the anxiety, the fear, the intensity and the tragedy as I myself relived viewing this travesty on TV that fateful September 11th, 2001 morning.

What about Leslie Haskin’s performance did you like?

I loved her voice, her accent, both Eastern and African American. I loved the power of her words and the emotion filled punctuation of the book on tape--no one could have read it and brought it to life better than the author herself!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I love the title itself, which really says it all!

Any additional comments?

It was a bit distracting to have the scripture verses interrupting the story--spoken in an English accent, was a bit hard to take. perhaps it was the dialectic of the opposite between American and Foreign, between African/American and Caucasian English. It makes sense to read scripture, since it is a spiritual awakening, however, I didn't see the connection between some of the biblical quotes and the message she was telling. All in all, however, it was a powerful, pointed and extraordinarily courageous account of Leslies spiritual, emotional and mental journey from tragedy to triumph. I applaud her strength, courage and wisdom!

Stick with it--a bit slow to start, but an amazing story!

It took me a few minutes to really get into this. I agree with the reviewer who noted that it was jarring to have the scripture read in a different voice, especially one with an English accent. It pulled me out of the story every time. I also felt the music was a little intrusive at the beginning, but that was only the first chapter or so. It doesn't continue throughout the book. Another reason I had a hard time connecting at first was that a lot of the beginning was written very abstractly when I wanted to really understand what she went through on 9/11. I came to realize that this is partly because there are gaps in her memory due to shock and the horror of what she witnessed. The actual description of her experience in the Twin Towers is the shortest part of the book. But I'm so glad I stuck with it because the story of her transformation and how God redeemed her experiences and restored her to peace and to relationship with Himself is very moving and beautiful. It was a quick and absorbing read, but left me with a lot to reflect on. I feel sure I'll be reading it again. It's inspiring and uplifting to see how God used this event in her life to completely transform her and ultimately bring about so much good in her life. I especially loved the beautiful last chapter. And what a cool addition, to have a bit at the end from her son and learn what became of them in the aftermath of this story. So even if you're a little put off by some of the elements I mentioned at the beginning, please stick with it. You'll be so glad you did! Thank you, Leslie, for being so open and vulnerable in writing about such a difficult time in your life. You bared your soul to point others to Jesus and I know He's so pleased with your sacrifice. It was a tremendous blessing to me.
