The writer has a lot of love and respect for dogs, and he knows what he is talking about. I think that is wonderful.

Dog husbandry

Something that stood out that I haven’t seen in other books are the things to do to prepare your dog to be handled at the vet, when circumstances change in the future (such as when you raise your dogs without young children, and then grandchildren come into the mix) and a lot of thinking down the road for the future information.

I think that Dr Ian Dunbar’s training methods and techniques are the way of the future.

I would recommend this book to any pet owner who wants to be the best pet parent they can. This book gave me a lot of confidence on how to approach my dog, and dogs to come, in terms of their training and integration of our lifestyles.

Lovely introduction to puppies!

Very good book with lots of useful tips. The main points are repeated many times, and shown with funny examples. Very useful and a very nice introduction to new owners or those who want a better behaved doggy next time!
All advises are very specific and well explained.

This book was a good dog training resource for our husky puppy! It's easy to follow, and has a positive training focus.

I can not believe how much I've learned from this book and how much more prepared I feel to own a dog.

Good, positive advice - for most dog owners

I realize there is a sharp divide between positive-only methods and the old school methods. For the most part, I lean towards the positive only, but appreciate and respect the dogs nature and pack life.

I found a good deal of the advice useful and plan to incorporate it into my own dog training with my puppies. The "before" advice is not as useful if you already have puppies. Some of the advice is dependent in selecting the right puppy from the right breeder from the beginning and Ian offers little advice if that didn't happen. What do I do if I didn't happen to get my puppy pre-house trained and well socialized?

However, there are several good tips that I would not have considered otherwise and he does give reasonable explanations as to why. Additionally, I enjoyed the British accent of the narrator and the author's occasional use of humor to spice up an otherwise dry topic.

I don't recommend this be your only puppy training book. There are several other perspectives worth considering and even if you stay on the positive-only side, this book feels incomplete as the sole resource for puppy training. However, it is a worthy part of a well rounded library of dog training and canine behavior books.

excellent information

I'm about to add a second puppy to my household. I used the Dunbar methods with my first dog and he is a well behaved dog that everyone enjoys being around. He isn't perfect, but pretty close to it all thanks to the technics I learned from Dr. Dunbar. It's now been two years since I brought him home and I wanted a refresher on everything for this second puppy. I feel empowered to do a good job with the new one. I have every confidence in my program of training. Thank you so much for that Dr. Dunbar!
