Acerca de esta escucha
From Erick Erickson, "arguably the most powerful conservative in America today" (The Atlantic), an inspiring book about life's enduring values, based on a viral essay he wrote for his children after he and his wife both faced grave medical situations.
"A must read." (RedState)
In late 2016, prompted by the news that his wife was battling cancer and his own pulmonary medical scare, Erick Erickson posted a piece to his website, The Resurgent. Styled as a letter to his young children, the piece, titled "If I Should Die Before You Wake," was a stirring message - and challenge - about how to live a life of purpose and joy. The essay went viral, shared by figures like New York Times columnist and author of The Road to Character, David Brooks.
Now, in a time when our country needs healing and a reminder of our values more than ever, Erickson has expanded the project, composing a total of 10 letters, featuring a wonderful mix of the practical, inspirational, and spiritual.

Historia
Behind the curtain of her happy on-screen persona, Valerie Bertinelli’s life has been no easy ride, especially when it comes to her own self-image and self-worth. She waged a war against herself for years, learning to equate her value to her appearance as a child star on One Day at a Time and punishing herself in order to fit into the unachievable Hollywood mold. She struggled to make her marriage to Eddie Van Halen—the true love of her life—work, despite all the rifts the rock-star lifestyle created between them.

American food is the story of mash-ups. Immigrants arrive, cultures collide, and out of the push-pull come exciting new dishes and flavors. But for Edward Lee, who, like Anthony Bourdain or Gabrielle Hamilton, is as much a writer as he is a chef, that first surprising bite is just the beginning. What about the people behind the food? What about the traditions, the innovations, the memories? A natural-born storyteller, Lee decided to hit the road and spent two years uncovering fascinating narratives from every corner of the country.

Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said a combination of beauty and strength made Southern women “whiskey in a teacup”. We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside, we’re strong and fiery. Reese’s Southern heritage informs her whole life, and she loves sharing the joys of Southern living with practically everyone she meets. She takes the South wherever she goes with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken.

Kitty Tait grew up a funny, chatty redhead who made everyone in her family laugh. But around the time she turned 14, Kitty began experiencing anxiety. Slowly, she disconnected from everyone around her and struggled to wake up, get dressed and leave the house. Full of worry, her parents tried everything, from new hobbies like reading and painting to medication and visits to a specialist. Nothing seemed to help. Then, one day, as Kitty stood on a stool watching her dad mix flour, water and salt, she determined Al’s gloopy, sludgy blob of bread looked a whole lot like her brain.

A powerful memoir of resilience, friendship, family, and food from the acclaimed chefs behind the award-winning Hy Vong Vietnamese restaurant in Miami. In 1975, after narrowly escaping the fall of Saigon, pregnant refugee and gifted cook Tung Nguyen ended up in the Miami home of Kathy Manning, a graduate student and waitress who was taking in displaced Vietnamese refugees. This serendipitous meeting evolved into a decades-long partnership, one that eventually turned strangers into family and a tiny, no-frills eatery into one of the most lauded restaurants in the country.

He had launched his own catering company with $20,000 that he made from selling candy on the subway, yet he’d been told he would never make it on television because his cooking wasn’t “Southern” enough. In this inspiring memoir about the intersection of race, fame, and food, he shares the remarkable story of his culinary coming-of-age.

There's nothing quite like family - and some people would say that there's nothing better. But in a world where we sometimes know more about the Kardashians than we do about the people sleeping right down the hall, it's easy to forget that walking through life with our family offers all sorts of joy wrapped up in the seemingly mundane. There's even a little bit of sacred sitting smack-dab in the middle of the ordinary. And since time's-a-wastin', we need to be careful that we don't take our people - and their stories - for granted.

Her mom finds comfort in her daughter's kitchen, not just in the delicious food but also just sitting with her as she cooks. Reseñas de la Crítica
"Striking...Reading [Erickson's] personal story is a small experiment in weakening the filter, in shaking off the spell of simulated life, of letting a person's suffering give you a glimpse of them in full." (Ross Douthat, New York Times)
"Poignant." (The Daily Briefing, Fox News)

Best book I have read in a long time!
I enjoy listening to Erick on WSB in Atlanta everyday on my ride home. Lately, I have been turning off the radio show & listen to this book. As much as I like listening to his show, I really enjoyed this book. Usually he talks about politics, with some personal stories & cooking tips sprinkled in throughout the program. This book is the exact opposite, very little about politics & almost exclusively about personal experiences, life advice, & great recipes. The only problem I have with this audio book is the chapter with the recipes. I have to keep rewinding the audio to make sure I write everything down correctly. This is my new favorite book and expected nothing less from Mr. Erickson.

A great book
I got the audio book and started listening as soon as it released and could not stop listening until the end. I have just finished listening to it for the third time and am about to start it again. It has made me think, smile, cry, laugh and want to do my best to become a better person to those around me and to my God. Very little about politics (which I love to hear Erick talk about) and a lot about family, friends, faith, good and bad, right and wrong and love. It is definitely a book I would recommend for anyone to read.

Life experiences
We are who we are because of our life experiences. Several years ago I found out that Mr. Erickson grew up in Dubai and I've always wondered what more there was to that story. This book goes above and beyond to explain why he is how he is, good and bad. I wonder now what I would write to my own kids to explain why I am the way I am and what I would want them to learn. The fact that he reads it as well makes the experience that much better. And yes, I do think he needs his own food show.
