Backs against the wall...

Galatea. The Mercenary's Star. Even the most down on their luck units can find work here. Leading the newly-formed Gray Death Legion has been challenging for Grayson Death Carlyle, so when a job comes their way, he’s only too happy to take it. The mission: train the local resistance on the planet Verthandi to resist their Draconis Combine masters.

But things do not go well almost from the moment the Legion arrives. Trapped on Verthandi and facing a superior force and a fractured populace, the men and women of the Legion find themselves in a situation that makes the campaign on Trellwan look like a walk in the park. And Grayson quickly learns that repeating his past successes may not be so easy this time…

Much better

I did not like the first book in the series. Probably because I came from Warhammer 40k and have them as my "scifi war" standard. This book felt much more mature and better written. There are still somethings that I cringed at while listening but overall this is a decent story. The narrator was perfect though. The moment he switched to a Scottish accent was when I started loving this audio book.

very good

sticks right with the book that I had as a kid in the '80s or early 90s I forget great narration great effects very very good not the typical battle text book on tape that just sounds all weird with crazy weird music

As good a listen as a read, those decades ago!

Read it when it first came out, literally decades ago. So good then. A quality listen as well. Really took me back to my wargaming roots in Battletech.

A good Narrator for Grayson Carlyle. & more than enuff variances in multiple other characters' voices. [Tho I didn't/don't *hear* Grayson as angry. 🙃]

Decision At Thunder Rift [book 1] had its novelization vs gameplay inconsistencies. Mercenary Star is much truer to its gameplay origins.

I'm in for book 3, The Price Of Glory!

But Where Is The Original Stackpole *Warrior* series, En Garde, Riposte & Coupé?!?!?

Classic battletech

Another fantastic novel. The gray death trilogy has to be the epitome of battletech. intrigue, drama and warfare collide in this game of thrones in space.

Sequel better than the first

William Keith hit his stride with this one, and Tren’s narration is great like usual.

Classic Battletech

I started playing Battletech as a teenager, and this one thile first fiction series based around the game that I read. It hasn't lost any of the thrill with age.

This was a great book. The action was top notch and intense and had a great story. it was also good to see the characters developed even further and I'm looking forward to the next one.
