Just ok

TGR's performance was outstanding, as usual. He is one of my favorite readers. The story itself had some very good arcs but I struggled keeping interested. Grey battled a blood pact throughout the book while his fellow Ronins each had challenges of their own. It seemed to me a war of attrition. It clearly sets up for the next book. I think I will wait to read reviews before I continue with this series.

Love it

This is another great book in the an ever improving series. Each book is getting better and I can't wait to see the story develop and hear the amazing voice acting. Usually the villains have the best voices IMO.

The world that is created in the book is expansive and has a lot of depth and backstory. The mix of different types of magic keeps me guessing, and the characters (Faye and Darius are my favs) keep me feeling it!

Cheers!

Couldn’t stop listening - a different breed

I’ve read a lot of fantasy and listened to a host of books, and it has to have a certain “spark” for me to really be hooked. The series has that. Most important are characters that feel like old friends. Was recommended this book by a friend and really glad because while book one started slower, and while all series I have some gripes with, it’s quickly becoming a favorite. But here’s my breakdown.

World building/pacing - First book felt a little rushed. This one slows down a lot.  Much better pacing. World building is cool. Grand elemental cities. Glowing sun bridges, giant waterfalls, floating buildings on zephyrs of air.

Uniqueness - It has some tendencies of generic “good vs evil”.  I like the whole idea of being dark legends and proving they are going to be different. Haven’t seen that done in a long time.

Magic - elemental magic system, spark flow. I don’t fully understand how it all works. Seems like a “soft system”. But it doesn’t detract from the overall

Characters (most important part) - My main complaint was not seeing enough of Gray. After all, the Ronin (the legends) are my favorite part.  I like that the main characters are developing their powers and I can’t wait to see how they learn to harness the elements. Ancient, powerful legends in young people’s bodies is a cool premise. Also sucker for sassy strong characters, so I really like Faye. I ship her and Gray still. Darius is charming, reminds me of Matrim Cauthon from WOT, but definitely his own.  And his dynamic with Gray was fun to watch.  I’m quickly becoming enamored with these characters, and I didn’t want the book to end.

Narration - Tim does an AMAAZZING job. I like to read and listen, and I found myself laughing and smiling at Tim’s take on the colorful cast.

Overall - Great addition to the series. Lovable cast of characters.  If you are hesitant, don’t be. It has some of the “typical” feels. Magic, dragons, honor and light amid darkness.  But it’s the complex characters and their growth that does it for me. The Ronin Saga is quickly developing into one of my favorite fantasies.

Dripping with atmosphere

What can I say?

The author has delved even deeper into the spellbinding, fantasy world of Farhaven. I was immersed into the faraway lands of the third epic saga of the legendary Ronin.    Just like his other two books, the wildly imaginative situations, and dramatic reincarnation of the colorful, "elemental trio" and each world that the 3 main characters encounter is "Dripping with atmosphere"--sublime and unique.  Each of the landscapes the group enters, are alive and explode off each page, with vivid and uber-creative, exciting details.   This is a must read and I'm a true fan of this author.

A fascinating adventure

I don't read many books, but my daughter recommended this one. I'm really enjoying it and am looking forward to reading Matt's other sagas.
