Publisher's Summary

Free-Spirited

Clarissa Sullivan dreams for more from life than sipping tepid tea in stifling parlors in Victorian Boston. She defies her family's wishes, continuing to teach poor immigrant children in Boston's West End, finding a much-needed purpose to her life.

Radical

As a suffragette, Clarissa is considered a firebrand radical no man would desire. For why should women want the vote when men have sheltered women from the distasteful aspects of politics and law?

Determined

When love blossoms between Clarissa and Gabriel McLeod, a struggling cabinetmaker, her family objects. Clarissa's love and determination will be tested as she faces class prejudices, manipulative family members, and social convention in order to live the life she desires with the man she loves. Will she yield to expectations, or follow her heart on a journey of self-discovery as she learns what she cannot live without?

Book and Reading was Excellent

I loved this story. I truly enjoy an audible book when I have a big project like painting. That way I only have to put it down one time and can finish it a day and a half. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Just okay

Any additional comments?

I think the story is good but a little too long and the ending is disappointing. I found myself skipping chapters as I felt some parts where overly descriptive and verbose. It a nice romance for a young audience. I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

An enjoyable story

I enjoyed the book. My one complaint was as the reader read the me s parts the reader maid the men seem slow and mentally handicapped. The narrator might want to consider in future readings to give the male subjects a more relaxed and natural feel.

OMG, cliffhanger!

I usually look at book ratings and not reviews because so many people add spoilers. However, I will say how disappointed I was in this book. The story is good, the narration drove me crazy and yet I stuck with it for 11 hours for a damn cliffhanger.

Good story line, very bad narrator.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Maybe to read, but it was very hard listening to this narrator. She was not good at male voices and I would not listen to it again, maybe read.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ramona Flightner? Why or why not?

Only if it was a different narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Boring voice, very bad at male voices.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Maybe

Any additional comments?

Get a different narrator.

Not the Right Book For Me

The author put a lot into this book and I appreciate that. However, I found that this was not really something that swept me away. It is about women's suffrage in Victorian Boston (what does that mean?) The main character does her best to promote the rights of women, while swooning over a man. The subject matter just didn't interest me and I gave up after listening and giving it several tries.

Ramona Flightner writes well and perhaps if it were pursuing a less serious matter I would have enjoyed it more.

Lauren Mccullough gives a solid performance.

Notes: Mild, safe book. Nothing to warn of here – at least as far as I listened to it, 5 hours or so.
Rating: G in a movie theater

I enjoy leaving reviews, as I know that I read the reviews of others before I purchase a book. If you found my review helpful in your decision about this book, would you please select "yes" directly below this review? Thank you so much.

Please consider "following me" here on Audible.com. I purchase a lot of books by authors that I am faithful to and well known names. I also have the unique opportunity to review books from lesser known/new authors in all genres. Most of these books are not something that I would not pick up on my own. I have been pleasantly surprised by new authors and great narrators.

Great book

Would you consider the audio edition of Banished Love to be better than the print version?

I haven't the print version but imagine that the expression from the narrator adds to the experience.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Clarissa - her independence at this time in history is amazing but she is still vulnerable and wants to open herself to love.

Which character – as performed by Lauren Mccullough – was your favorite?

Clarissa's father. I loved the way her was performed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The final scene as the book was ending. I can't say more for fear of spoiling it for others.

Slower Pace for a Slower Time

I really did enjoy this book in the end and the book's hook truly has me wanting to read more but the overall story was just a tad bit drawn out for my taste. The character development was wonderful and I enjoyed how the relationships intertwined but it took too long for someone to make a move or something in the plot to happen. However, I am partial to today's "fast paced-give me now" society and not the "let's sit and sip tea and talk home for hours" society.

The narration by Lauren Mccullough was okay. I enjoyed her character voices but felt many of them blended together so that it was hard to tell who was talking. I also was disappointed by her Irish voice of Da, but I commend her attempt. I loved her narration pacing and wonderful diction.

I would recommend this book.
