Publisher's Summary

Paranoia-fuelled Zack Walker has trouble convincing his loved ones to obey his rules for keeping them out of harm's way.

He's even uprooted his family and headed for the tranquillity of the suburbs. But then Zack stumbles upon a body, and a trail of deceit and murder leads right back to his own front door. Suddenly the 'burbs is not looking nearly so safe....

With a killer roaming around their neighbourhood and Zack's overactive imagination in overdrive, he's sure things can't get any worse. But then another local is murdered - and Zack's paranoid tendencies get him implicated in the crime. To protect his family - and avoid being busted for a crime he didn't commit - he's going to have to override his instincts and track down the killer himself.

Slow start

A very slow and frustrating beginning- I nearly gave up but glad I didn't. Zac's character was also very frustrating- as indeed it was meant to be. Developed into an entertaining and humorous storyline - very different from the author's previous books. Excellent narration and humorous style. Glad I enjoyed it as I have 3 more from the series to read!!

Funny and thrilling

I read this series many years ago before I got into audio books. It is a little slow to get going but the funny stuff keeps you interested. I had forgotten mostly what it was about so it was likely starting a new book. It’s very well narrated too, a good holiday read. I definitely recommend.

Pleased to finish this book

I have enjoyed other books by this authors and it was only this that kept me going to the end. Dark comedy? Light comedy? - whatever it attempted to be, for me it failed. I found the central character not funny but mentally defective, why was his intelligent and successful wife with this stupid man? Enough, the book really deserves no more comment.

A very unusual hero

Zack will drive you crazy because he's so darned stupid. You'll be shouting at him to stop being such a bonehead, but he just goes on, ultimately digging an ever deeper hole for himself.
Yet Barclay, again, makes it work. It's way more kooky that the normal mystery, but if you go the distance with Zack its worth the effort.
I can't say I'm on the edge of my seat for the next in the series, but I know that ultimately I'll read it!

Great narrator

A real laugh out loud book.Loved the narrator he reminded me of Jack Lemmon in The Neil Simon films

Zac Walker book 1

The book has quite a slow start but it improves considerably as it develops. The narrator seems well matched to the nuance of the text and this helps bring out some of its lighter moments.

Slow and boring

This book was really a disappointment. After two and a half hours it hasn't got started and I give up. The main character is a writer of sci-fi, married and the father of two teenagers. He doesn't seem to be more mature than them - rather the opposite. So far in the book, he has gone on and on and on ( and on) about himself - and he is not an interesting person. We get all the details about his frustration about (and silly reactions to) his wife leaving her keys in the front door and his children leaving their backpacks on the floor. I only wonder why his wife hasn't left him years ago. In chapter 6, he finds a dead body and is mostly pleased that he has now caught up with his boyhood friend who found one long ago. The narrator reads in a monotonous voice and I suppose that he hasn't been able to get interested in this extremely boring main character. I read some reviews before buying this book and they seem to find it funny. Probably, I have not that kind of humour

Surprisingly addictive

I bought this on a 2 for 1 offer so wasn’t sure how it would be but glad I did. Part domestic drama and part murder story it is full of humour and the narrator’s laconic style is perfect.

Always easy to listen to

There is no doubt about it William Hope is a superb narrator, he makes the stories come to life and I find the Linwood Barclay books very easy to listen to when I tuck in ready for sleep in bed.
