Story
Milly has barely spoken to her sister Judith in years. They hardly exchanged a word at their mother's funeral. They could not be further apart. So when Milly gets an invitation to go on a hiking trip, she hopes it will be an opportunity for reconciliation. Inviting her school-friend Harper along with her for support, the small party head off together into the bush. What awaits Milly is far from just a bracing hike in the wilderness, but an unexpected encounter with the past. The form it takes is revenge. But who is enacting it against Milly, and why?

Story
An accident during the construction of a tunnel beneath the Bering Strait leads to the discovery of a network of caverns and evidence that hints at the survival of a primitive human species. Led by DARPA technologist Reinhard Thyssen, a team of experts from around the globe is dispatched into the subterranean maze to discover all they can before the caves completely flood. Something lurks in the darkness, though. A creature has evolved into a predator unlike any the world has ever known, and it's up to the scientists to make sure that it never reaches the surface.

Creepy Aussie thriller
7 months pregnant Paige and her husband Hal are travelling in the Australian Outback when their car gets a flat tire. As he is changing the wheel Hal is bitten by a snake on his leg and his other leg is crushed by the car. Paige sets off on foot to find help and when 2 women in a truck pull up and offer to help they their nightmare begins. I was very excited by the synopsis of this book and couldn’t wait to start reading. It wasn’t quite what the title led me to believe. The term ‘Ripper’ in the title made me think this would be a slasher type book, perhaps a little like the movie Wolf Creek. Instead I would say this book has more in common with Stephen King’s Misery. I did enjoy the book which is very dark and disturbing. There was a deep sense of foreboding running through it. All the time you just knew something bad was going to happen! This sense of foreboding was helped by the descriptions of the crumbling ex hospital, Mabel House. The fact that Paige was alternately strong and then weak made her character believable. The character of Soona broke my heart and I was glad to read that after the events of the book she was being looked after in a care home. The ending of the book was satisfying and although we’re not told by the writer, I hope that Paige will be able to have another child.
