Smart, hard-to-put-down science fiction thriller

I read a lot of science fiction, and much of it is forgettable. The Stolguard Incident was intriguing and hard to put down. It is a solid science fiction thriller with strong pacing, good twists, and a plot that kept me wanting to know what happened next.

Sometimes these thrillers show government agencies breaking rules and abusing their powers, but it is treated as acceptable because it is all for the greater good. Others get very preachy about their political beliefs. This novel takes more of a just-the-facts approach. There are people who do things for all sorts of reasons.

Given Lyn Alden’s background in macroeconomics, Bitcoin, and financial analysis, it would have been easy for the book to become a thinly disguised essay about technology, society, and power. To be clear, I am a big fan of her nonfiction book Broken Money, and I was quite surprised when I heard she was coming out with fiction. Having finished this book, I can say I am a big fan of her fiction as well. The novel works. The tension builds naturally, and the reveal of the technologies, motives, and underlying systems felt earned rather than forced.

I also appreciated the characters. They felt real. Their emotions and motives did not seem forced. In some thrillers, characters make obviously bad choices just to keep the plot moving. Not here. I did wonder, for some of the characters who grew up in the Stolguard facility, whether they weren’t actually a bit too normal given their abnormal upbringing.

Ending a novel like this is always a challenge. It is hard to blend the natural progression of the rest of the book with clever twists that keep it interesting, while still delivering a solid, satisfying ending. Many thrillers start strong and then fall apart when it is time to wrap things up. The Stolguard Incident conclusion was solid.

Personally, I dislike narration that tries too hard to pretend it is an audio drama. I do not want the narrator acting over the story. I want narration that fades into the background and lets me focus on the author’s words. Carla Bitcoin and Walker America did that well. They clearly articulated the story, made it easy to distinguish the different characters, and added enough variation to keep the listening experience clear without being distracting or overpowering.

Overall, The Stolguard Incident is easy to recommend for readers who enjoy science fiction thrillers. The audiobook on Audible also does a good job bringing the novel to life for listeners.

Loved it. Great characters, awesome setting and I smirked a few times when I caught these subtle hints to Lyn’s appearance or general mentioning of BTC related things.
