Proctor and Gamble faced a critical problem in 1907. With more and more households using electricity for lighting, their cottonseed oil candle industry was collapsing. Faced with a growing stocks of cottonseed oil, they turned to Wilhelm Normann, a German chemist and inventory of hydrogenation of fat to transform the cottonseed oil into vegetable fat for cooking. Crisco was born. What followed was a massive marketing and influence campaign that transformed the American diet into the mess it is today.
