Monash University is conducting a world-first study examining a new helmet called Game Gear, which laboratory tests show reduces head knock impacts by up to 90% through rubber spheres and connectors that distribute force around the skull. The two-year study will involve 600 athletes aged 16 and above playing Australian football and rugby league across Victoria, Queensland and the ACT. The helmet is the first to be certified by the AFL, with Manly Sea Eagles captain Jake Trebojevic trialling it in NRL pre-season games.
