A GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A traditional American woman, a “tradwife” influencer, suddenly awakens in the brutal reality of 1855—where she must unravel whether this living nightmare is an elaborate hoax, a twisted reality show, or something far more sinister in this sensational debut novel.

"A bold and biting satire, Yesteryear…will have you cackling and gasping right to the final page."
—Nita Prose, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maid series

My name was Natalie Heller Mills, and I was perfect at being alive.

Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle. Her charming farmhouse is rustic, her husband a handsome cowboy, her six children each more delightful than the last. So what if there are nannies and producers behind the scenes, her kitchen hiding industrial-grade fridges and ovens, her husband the heir to a political dynasty? What Natalie’s followers—all 8 million of them—don’t know won’t hurt them. And The Angry Women? The privileged, Ivy League, coastal elite haters who call her an antifeminist iconoclast? They’re sick with jealousy. Because Natalie isn’t simply living the good life, she’s living the ideal—and just so happens to be building an empire from it.

Until one morning she wakes up in a life that isn’t hers. Her home, her husband, her children—they’re all familiar, but something’s off. Her kitchen is warmed by a sputtering fire rather than electricity, her children are dirty and strange, and her soft-handed husband is suddenly a competent farmer. Just yesterday Natalie was curating photos of homemade jam for her Instagram, and now she’s expected to haul firewood and handwash clothes until her fingers bleed. Has she become the unwitting star of a ruthless reality show? Could it really be time travel? Is she being tested by God? By Satan? When Natalie suffers a brutal injury in the woods, she realizes two things: This is not her beautiful life, and she must escape by any means possible.

A gripping, electrifying novel that is as darkly funny as it is frightening, Yesteryear is a gimlet-eyed look at tradition, fame, faith, and the grand performance of womanhood.

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write my debut novel?
"In the winter of 2024, I found myself deeply immersed—and yes, a little bit obsessed—with the world of tradwives. I wrote deeply researched essays on the topic for my day job, and shared short-form content in my free time that analyzed this trend through the feminist and the media literacy lens. One morning, I woke up thinking of a single word: “yesteryear.” In that word, a whole world was born. I started writing the novel later that day."– Caro Claire Burke, author of Yesteryear

I originally bought the paperback but had to get the audio because it was SO GOOD I needed to hear the story when I was too busy to sit and read. It’s phenomenal. Highly highly recommend. Such a surprising ending

AMAZING

It is very possible that this book will become one of the most important books of this decade and beyond! The world seems to have gone mad in the last several years and this book shines a light on what so many of us have been witnessing. My hope is that it opens the eyes of so many who are addicted to their phones and social media; that they put their phones down and see what they are truly missing.
The characters are believable, the prose is exceptional, and the plot is like nothing I expected! This novel needs to be made into a movie for all our "non-readers" to see. YES, it is that good!

A must read/listen!

Alternatingly haunting and funny, devastating and enjoyable, terrifying and entertaining. 10/10 you won't put this down, and will talk about it to anyone who crosses your path.

one of the best books of the decade

I had a hard time getting into this book – for a very simple reason. I found the FMC to be so unlikable – I didn’t wanna spend my free time with her. She was toxic – I felt like I do when I watch one of those reality TV shows where the crazy women are flipping tables. Pure toxicity. But I keep reading because it became a very compelling story. I realize the toxicity was the point. Really well written, well developed characters. I didn’t come close to figuring out the ending.

Great story
