Killian
When I’m tossed into the trunk of a car, I realize that what little luck I have has finally run out—especially when I find that Tony, the man who’d abducted me, is planning on using me to get back at my father. My chances for escape look pretty bleak when I’m handcuffed to Tony’s bodyguard, an intimidating man named Shepherd who apparently loves tight shirts and seems to be amused by making my life miserable. Soon, though, I learn that Shepherd has a heart and a brain. And sometimes, those two things can be a bigger weapon than anything in a time like this. I just have to learn how to wield them.

After Shepherd gets me away from Tony’s men, I discover that he’s a survivor, a fighter, and the only person who seems willing to help me when it feels like the whole world is against me. At first, I’m not sure if I can trust the man, but the more we get to know each other, the more I realize that he’s funny and kind of sweet. He’s determined to protect me, but he doesn’t know all of my secrets. He doesn’t know that Tony isn’t the only one looking for me. But together, as we face betrayal and taking down the worst monster of all, we’re determined that we will be the lucky ones after all.

Just My Luck is a 101k word book featuring two broken souls who find peace in each other. While it does have a mixture of action, humor, and Alice’s trademark snarky banter, there are moments that might be considered darker to some listeners.

Not what I expected, It was not my cup of tea. I have to admit I prefer her books with more humor

I was so excited when I found out that Just my Luck was finally going to be available in audio and Declan Winters did not disappoint, he did such a great job! I feel like his voice was a perfect match to how I imagined Shepherds voice to sound like!

Bear is the bestest and cutest pupper!

Although this story is much darker than most of Alice Winters' work, I couldn't put it down! I was captivated by Killian and Shepherd. I made several guesses as to which way the story would go, and wouldn't you know it, these characters had minds of their own and the story just got more and more interesting. While I still prefer Ms. Winters' funnier stories, this one was really good. Declan Winters did a good job bringing the characters to life.

Darker...but so good.

This title is different than the other Alice winters books I’ve read. A bit more serious and dark, but I really like it. I will say I didn’t feel the chemistry between the two MC’s at first. I think their connection was more of a trauma bond than anything else. However, as always, the banter was 10/10. I honestly think this author can do wrong, and this book is another example of how talented the writer is. Narration was 10/10 as well.

Different but in a good way!

One of my favorite authors + one of my favorite narrators. Declan brought Killian and Shepherd to life and I am here for it. I've been waiting what feels like forever for this book to be made on audio and I couldn't be happier with how it came out. Alice has a knack for finding the best narrators for her audiobook stories and while I am positive one of her usual guys would have done an amazing job, Declan blew me away. This was their first time working together but I really hope it isn't the last. The story of course was brilliant, as is everything Alice writes. Killian is the perfect blend of sweet and naive but also very smart and practical. And poor Shepherd just needed someone to love him. Bear was a great side character and I love his and Killian's relationship. He's not just a dog, I felt like he really held his own in this story. I am not sure what else I can say to convince anyone to listen to this book except if you like a darkish story but with enough humor to make it not feel so dark, this is the book for you!

So Freaking Good!!!

I loved the way these two listened to each other and was there to be what the other needed to overcome their past and get away from the lives they were trapped in. They supported each other through every challenge. There was a lot of dark, messed up stuff in the story but the end was satisfying.

Loved it

Loved the romance and humor . Alice Winters never disappoints. Her work is an automatic buy for me.

Flawed but wonderful main characters

So many authors in this genre are so trope dependent, without the understanding that bombarding the reader with activities is not the same as a character driven story, they write truly terrible books. Books which sadly still get 5 star reviews. Alice Winters nails this should be terrible story line with some tried and true basics - she develops her characters and stays true to them without overworking the plot. The title suggests some pithy, madcap misadventure instead of kidnap and killers. Someone could have done better with that name.

Killian, the central character, is a seemingly aimless kid in his early twenties who is tossed in a trunk by the town gangster. We learn that Killian is the son of the police chief, and has a very unhappy home life. He is being held as leverage over his father and his circumstances while being held are grim. He finds himself being watched by buff bodyguard, Shepherd. While we watch them interact, we get a series of flashbacks of Killian's formative experiences. As the story progresses, it does get quite dark. It seems Winters is known for snarky banter, which is on full display here, however it doesn't get in the way.

Declan Winters narration, while a bit raspy for 22 year old, is quite solid. He navigates a primarily male cast with ease and never falls into vocal traps many narrators fail to avoid.

While many authors over describe, Winters uses restraint, even to the point that I really never had an idea of how either of the leads appear, but I will take restraint over filler like the color of the countertops. The star of the show is the slow and steady character development, that the reader will believe the story progression as it relates to the leads. By not trying too hard with the crime side of the story, Winters doesn't back herself into any corners, allowing the guys to be front and center. Highly recommended!

Terrible title, great book!

Well written story. A bit darker than most Alice’s books with less hilarious shenanigans. Morally gray characters that win you over sooner or later. Delicious snarky banter. Dog named Bear. Those freaking sad faiths that make you wanna cry and rage and go get milk and cookies for the poor guys.
