Captivating

This is one of the most brilliantly captivating stories I’ve ever read or listened too. I generally read a lot of fantasy novels and while this one has some light fantasy elements it’s not the backbone of the story. The depiction of the characters and how you get invested in their story is fantastic. It is the most unique story I’ve read in years and finished it in two days. I could not recommend this more.

Wei Yin, a poor village girl, against all odds, is chosen—and that is when the real plot of the story truly begins. Wei faces multiple adversities, from jealous court ladies to the king’s cruelties. From the very beginning, the way Shen writes is captivating, and the way the story unfolds keeps you intrigued chapter after chapter. The novel reveals traditions, political intrigue, and psychological and physical abuse—elements that can be somewhat difficult to witness.

The audiobook was incredible. Katherine Chin made my experience truly extraordinary.
