The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive—the iconic epic fantasy masterpiece that has sold more than 10 million copies, from acclaimed bestselling author Brandon Sanderson.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiant killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

To be clear I still recommend the series but this book had too many forced side plots. The battles were short and not to the authors standards. Very informative and filled many missing pieces of the story. Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author and it is exponentially difficult to end arks that are of epic story telling. So I want to be gracious and explain that I had very very high expectations

I love this series but was disappointed with book 5

It Jumped around too much. It was not as good as previous books in series.

Really enjoyed the expansion of the cosmere and learning so much more about it. Fast forwarded through the same-sex romance/story—it added zero value and diverged from the norms set in the first books.

Exciting story and enjoyed the expansion of the cosmere.

Once again the narrators were extraordinary. I read when I can and listen in the car on my way to work. It’s seamless and adds a bit of depth to the characters when you have a voice to think of when reading.
I’ve been reading these books since 2010 and was excited to see a finality of some sort. The “Sanderlanche” started a few chapters in and the entire book moved with a sense of urgency. No fluff or unnecessary dialogue. It was effective and made me feel the pressure. With all that said, I was really hoping to end this arch. 14+ years in the making and I feel like we just got set up for another 15 years of reading and waiting. First world problems I guess.
Of all the 5 books this was my least favorite, but that’s not saying much because I consider the Stormlight archive to be the greatest fantasy series of all time. This is a must read, and I highly enjoyed it.
Thank you Brandon for writing such fine and entertaining epics.

Least favorite in a series of favorites.

Amazing world and details, but wow are all these pieces milked for so much drama that it gets really really slow… I’ll keep going, however I almost wish I hadn’t found the series because by the next book I can barely remember the pieces of the former plots..

Powerful story, drawn out soooo long

Maybe it’s just me of the time between books but I’ve got a little bored of everyone having some emotional trauma they are dealing with all the time. It has become like whining to me. I still enjoy the story but I could do with less of major characters good and bad being so militant in their position then break down like babies.

Good story but it has become somewhat redundant to me

Just finished and I’m still trying to digest it all. I feel like as I’m watching each character’s journey and growth, I’m seeing Brandon’s own journey and growth into the master he’s become (and I have no doubt he is still progressing).

The depth he works to explore and capture so many unique journeys people experience in real everyday life and then weaves them together into a provoking fantasy story is truly inspiring.

Every single book, page, chapter, and word that further develops the Cosmere is just addicting to read, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Journey Before Destination Meets Journey and Destination

I have read a lot of Brandon Sanderson, and liked most of them very much. His last 2 Stormlight books however have dragged for me in parts, and I feel like a lot of the “therapy”, constant introspection, and torturous restating of ideas and concepts we already know causes me to lose interest in the book and just kind of push through to the end. Brandon writes a majestic conclusion to a book like none other, however for me they seem rushed sometimes and too quick to lead to the next book. If you are a fan of the Stormlight archive, you will enjoy these books, and the performances are nothing short of brilliant as they always are from Kate and Michael. However the “philosophy” and religion in these books leaves me wanting, I feel like it’s not the characters but Sanderson’s own personal beliefs that are being bashed into us over and over. A lot of what he’s saying is true, but some parts are just way way off, again in my opinion. I’m not trying to be a critic, but just to give an honest review. Sanderson is a very impressive writer, and he crafts words like few I’ve read, and he turns out consistent content for us as well which is more than we can say for some authors (*cough* Rothfuss *cough*) All in all it’s a good book but I found myself far more invested in the characters in the first 3 books than the last 2. Your experiment may vary, thank you for reading my review.

Good but not great (In my opinion)

long. so long. I know that's a silly thing to gripe about but books four and five felt like homework.

that said, extremely precise story, great moments, earned character triumphs. if you're this far into the series, you know what to expect.

well written but not geared towards me

It took way too long to get to the end for my taste as the book felt empty for about 50 hours EVEN though I love those characters and their stories. It just felt like filler political episodes of otherwise fantastic shows. That said I actually enjoy the ending and most of the decisions. I’m excited for the future of this series and the Cosmere as a whole, but I feel like this particular book will be highly debated.
