Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washington D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver.

Bug, a natural, charismatic leader, refuses to leave anyone behind while the other, Books, is a pragmatic social outsider who wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive.

But DC isn't exactly the safehaven they hoped for, having been divided into three major factions: the Mall—which is controlled by a man named Knox and his lieutenants—Columbia Heights to the north, and Anacostia to the south.

On arrival, Books immediately recognizes that the people of the Mall are in a wartime posture. Uncomfortable with the idea of being pulled into someone else's war, he advises that the entire company should depart. Bug, upon realizing that the Mall is wonderfully organized with hydro-electric power, security, and a functioning hospital, refuses that advice, stating that it is more than fair that they should help their new benefactors defend their adopted territory.

Can their bond endure their conflicting points of view or will they be drawn against each other, and into a war that will consume everyone...leaving DC in Ashes?

Couldn't Finish

Loved the rest of the series and was excited for this one to come out. Bray's awesome narration couldn't compensate for how absolutely boring this book is. Eight chapters in and I turned it off. Zero character development, and I really had no idea what was going on. I didn't know who I cared about and just couldn't follow it. Bummer.

New direction. Total commune.

Been waiting a long time for this and only a few additions could have made me happier. It’s so awesome to be back in the universe, especially with Bray’s performance.

Great story and worth listening to.

Dont let all the negative reviews sway you from getting this book. No this is not a direct continuation of book 4 and no this book does not have the original folks from the bowl in Wyoming. That is OK because it's still very good and it will connect back atvsome point. you need to hsve new charecters and you meed t9 learn aboutvthem as well. I can't wait to see how this gets tied in with the rest of the series. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Great writing by the authors and great narratithe series.

Firstly, I absolutely LOVE this book series. It is my favorite of all time, so even though I felt this book was not nearly as good as the rest, I'm hopeful the next book will tie characters from this community to those of the first four books.

The characters in this installment didn't quite keep my attention as the ones from the other books. They just weren't that interesting and most had shallow development overall. It just felt like a petty gang war with all parties acting irrational, unintelligent, and immature.

Finally, the author used "he thought about that" so many times it got almost ridiculous.

Intense but not quite as good as previous books

RC Bray is amazing as usual. the book was very good overall, but not quite as good as the previous books in the series. I still recommend it if you like post apocalyptic fiction, especially of the realistic variety.
