Soviet Tank Company Tactics, May 1976
This study of Soviet tank company tactics is written as a "how they fight" manual. Many of the concepts and methods used by the Soviets appear to the US or NATO military listener so alien that there is a temptation to say "this is unworkable". The listener should appreciate that the Soviet tank company commander has a vastly different task from his US or NATO equivalent. His task is to train and lead his company as directed by well-established principles set out in field service regulations, and as interpreted by his superiors. The company fights either as part of a battalion size unit, or with the close support of other tank, motorized rifle, and artillery units. The battalion is the basic unit of maneuver in the Soviet Ground Forces and a company is best regarded as a fire team.
While this report is somewhat dated, I believe the basic underlying tactics have been adopted by the Russian New Look reforms and help define Russian military modernization ambitions. Naturally the use of new technologies such as unmanned vehicles (both lethal and nonlethal), artificial intelligence, and network-centric warfare will complicate the battlespace. However, in the final analysis, somebody will have to get into a tank and wade into the fray, guns blasting. How the Soviets did that in the past - knowing what works and what doesn't - is bound to affect their approach to combat today.

The Bear Went Over the Mountain was written by Soviet officers, who had served in Afghanistan and returned for the extensive Command and Staff course at the Frunze Combined Arms Academy in Moscow. While they were at the Academy, the History of the Military Art Department had the Afghanistan veterans write vignettes of their experience. They analyzed these, edited the best and added commentary as lessons learned for future war in mountain-desert terrain. The department published them as an in-house a book in 1991.

In the dog days of August 2008, a column of Russian tanks and troops rolled across the Republic of Georgia’s northern border and into South Ossetia, sparking a war that was over almost before it began. The war, while not insignificant, lasted all of five days. The number of casualties did not exceed one thousand, the threshold most political scientists use to classify a war, although thousands of Georgians were displaced. By historical comparison, when Soviet tanks entered Hungary in 1956 and Afghanistan in 1979-89, the fatalities totaled 2,500 and roughly 14,000 respectively.

Worth a Listen
Though most of the information is mid 70s it still has validity. The section on the Battalion Tactical Group (BTG) now prevalent in the Russian Army is well written and timely.
The narration is fine, I was hesitant at first but you get used to his style as the book goes on.
Definitely worth the few bucks they are charging for it! I will listen to it again.
