Jules Verne’s masterpiece, The Mysterious Island, is a fascinating story of five men and a dog who escape the American Civil War in a hot air balloon. In crisis situations, they are assisted by an unseen helper who once supplies medicine and another time beats back the pirates. During their stay, the men domesticate an orangutan called Ju. They are eventually saved by a passing ship.

The narrator was awesome

Deserted island, pirates, clever castaways, hot air balloons, volcano! I recommend. It’s several hours long, so be prepared.

I am a big Jules Verne fan and this book did not do it for me. It was too long and drawn out with the survival skills of some of the castaways being impractical to the point of annoyance. I ended up increasing the listening speed as high as I could tolerate and zipping through while napping just to get to the end
