Edgar Allan Poe - the master of horror - was also responsible for writing the first detective stories in history.

His master sleuth, the elusive logician C. Auguste Dupin, is the man the police turn to when they find themselves unable to solve a mystery. Here are two of Poe's Dupin stories in a single volume, one involving blackmail of the royal family and the other...a tale of two brutal murders in the heart of Paris!

The narration for me was like listening to an old-fashioned baseball announcer. I will search for another one with a different performer. I love Edgar Allen Poe, and these are really good stories.

The story is from Poe, of course it's great.

Omg Kevin Theis is great at reading these Dark Classics. He brings Edgar Allan Poe books to a different dimension. I will be listening to this again on Halloween

Wow, I didn’t know Poe wrote Sherlock Holmes stories. While horror is my main genre I haven’t listened to a lot of Poe. I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes so this was a great treat from the legendary writer. I was expecting a bit more horror and got a great detective story from the mind of Edgar Alan Poe. I am really happy having listened to this now learning that this story was the inspiration for so many other great stories.

While I have listened to a few Poe stories I was never that excited. Unless Vincent Price it was on film and Vincent Price was the lead, I usually just lost interest. So this was a great treat. I was quite partial to The Murders in the Rue Morgue. While The Purloined Letter followed some of the same style it wasn’t nearly as adventurous or of a follow the clues mystery. Not the typical Poe and while this was right for me this could be a miss for someone seeking his darker style.

The narrator did a great job. To me, he had the voice of a radio narrator of yesteryear. Was perfect for these old time stories and I would gladly listen to him tell more.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Sherlock Holmes before there was Sherlock Holmes

It's hard to go wrong with Poe, and it's always wonderful when his stories are brought to life this way :)

I was given this book free at my request and have voluntarily written this review.

How long has it been since you've read Edgar Allan Poe? It had been a long time for me, and I was delighted to rediscover these two classics. Narrator Kevin Theis revels in the twists and turns of the 19th-century language, including impressive turns with foreign phrases in multiple tongues. These enhanced audio versions by Fort Raphael Press brings the stories to vivid life with audio flourishes that amplify the effects, sounds and strangeness of the tales. This two-for-one is a terrific way to tune the ear to Poe's language and style and enjoy this American master of letters.

Poe treasures in a great package!
