Not bad at all

The story was okay, though very slow. Certainly worth a credit in terms of length. Be patient with this one. Be very patient.

Great work, uninspired narration

Tad Williams writes an excellent story here, that I loved reading. But it doesn't translate well into an audio book with this particular narrator.

Slow story and all characters sound the same

struggle to finish this one. the plot moves slowly and you get lost in the many characters.

If you could sum up The Dragonbone Chair in three words, what would they be?

An essential read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dragonbone Chair?

Williams's prose left such an impression I could swear that I'd read a hundred pages set in Da'ai Chikiza, or seen a gallery of art depicting it, but there are probably less than 10 pages set there.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Worst: the whispery Sithi voices. Also bad: the uniform slowness given to Rimmersfolk, the bizarre Nabbanai accent, and the uniformity of characters within the same language family. Andrew Wincott probably isn't the worst narrator I've ever listened to, but he's definitely the wrong narrator for this series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There's a moment in Saint Hoderund's Abbey, where Simon finds a Book of the Aedon with an inscription, that merits contemplation.

Any additional comments?

Although I quite dislike Andrew Wincott's narration, it's probably not enough to prevent me from listening to the rest of the series, due to the quality of the writing and the nostalgia I hold for the series. If someone more suited were to narrate the books, I would definitely recommend the series to others - as it is I would probably recommend against purchasing the audiobook for anyone other than dedicated fans.

A proper epic fantasy.

I have only just finished this first book in the series and I find myself wanting to move on to the next immediately. I won't say it is perfect, the book has its problems and may come off as stale to some. Those looking for a well told fantasy could do much worse. For those seeking fresh and bold new ideas this may feel a little too much like LotR. Regardless of somewhat tired tropes, Dragonbone Chair is well written and properly paced to make the familiar conventions of epic fantasy delightful.
