"Sometimes, you need to consider the past to see what the future holds." (Journal of Robert Mannford, Day 052, Year 00)
Wayran knows his strange dreams are visions into the future and that Mannford's machines are not yet done with humanity. The keys to understanding all their fates lie within the madman's journal he found in the Wastes. However, none of that will matter if he and his brother Matoh cannot clear their names after the mysterious catastrophe during the academy's initiation ceremony.
New Toeron, the capital city of Salucia, is on the verge of a riot as a string of horrific and racist murders continues to escalate within its walls. John Stonebridge and the Constabulary race to uncover the real motive behind the terrible crimes and catch the killer before it's too late.
The invasion of the Kutsal Empire on the western fringes of the Nine Nations is well underway. The holy nation of Kenz fell to the invaders within a month, and the empire has plans for the rest of Salucia, but the fate of the Kutsal Empire is about to change as Jonah has awoken, and he now remembers his tragic past.

Rhys David's performance was good in the first book, but like many sequel performances, he has improved exponentially. The work in this book is among the very best I've listened to, dripping with exhaustion, or heart-racing excitement, the emotional range delivered really draws you into the story.
I highly recommend this to fans of fantasy, but it contains many genres of story telling.
