Wildly successful when it was first published in 1955, Patrick Dennis' Auntie Mame sold over two million copies and stayed put on the New York Times bestseller list for 112 weeks. It was made into a play, a Broadway as well as a Hollywood musical, and a fabulous movie starring Rosalind Russell. Since then, Mame has taken her rightful place in the pantheon of Great and Important People as the world's most beloved, madcap, devastatingly sophisticated, and glamorous aunt. She is impossible to resist, and this hilarious story of an orphaned ten-year-old boy sent to live with his aunt is as delicious a listen in the twenty-first century as it was in the 1950s.

I've always loved this book; it was tradition in our family to read it and "The Joyous Season" aloud at Christmas. Not only was it great to hear the story again, Christopher Lane's narration brought an extra element of character and narration that made the whole thing better.

Still one of my favorites!

This was a very delightful audiobook, although my favorite chapter will always be chapter four, when Mame and Patrick go south.

I loved it!

Having seen the movie I was more than ready to hear the full account of Patrick's account of his take on Aunt Mame. Was not disappointed!!!

While I initially questioned if I would be able to finish the story due to its references to minority groups, incorporation of some sterotypes, and the obvious differences in the treatment of individuals as a result of socioeconomic standing, I'm glad that I kept going. Yes, some of the scenes were hard to take, but the main characters were staged in a time of societal change, plus the main characters really proved themselves in but not of and didn't show as merely unaffected bystanders to common prejudices often boldly voiced at the time. This story is a well written adventure in relationships. I enjoyed it.

Fun, heartfelt, and smart storytelling

The story of Auntie Mame has long been a classic for good reason. Of course it will make you laugh…out loud! Likewise will it make you cry, too. It does me, every time I read it.
She believed life was a banquet. And it was about living to the fullest and not putting up with pretentious snobbery. You’re going to have so much fun with Auntie Mame! Dive right in!
