Saint Augustine is one of the most influential figures in all of Christianity, yet his path to sainthood was by no means assured. Born in AD 354 to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Augustine spent the first 30 years of his life struggling to understand the nature of God and his world. He learned about Christianity as a child but was never baptized, choosing instead to immerse himself in the study of rhetoric, Manicheanism, and then Neoplatonism - all the while indulging in a life of lust and greed.

In Augustine, acclaimed historian Robin Lane Fox re-creates Augustine's early life with unparalleled insight, showing how Augustine's quest for knowledge and faith finally brought him to Christianity and a life of celibacy. Augustine's Confessions, a vivid description of his journey toward conversion and baptism, still serves as a model of spirituality for Christians around the world.

Magisterial and beautifully written, Augustine will be the definitive biography of this colossal figure for decades to come.

Critic reviews

"An erudite and ordered reading of Augustine's Confessions and a worthy addition to any library on early Christianity." ( Kirkus)

I thought reviews were optional, Audible. Why force us to buy into your lies, hmm?

fascinating and thorough, well worth the listening

A historian should not try to do theology. Stay in your lane. Lane Fox can’t help himself, he rounds off Augustine’s edges, trading in the thunder of sovereign grace for something softer, more Roman Catholic than catholic.

Not great

The read info was clear and entertaining. The book was at times humorous and witty but always exceedingly informative. I would definitely recommend this to anyone desiring to learn about Augustine, his background, his generation and his contemporaries.

I actually read this monstrosity twice. It's great. This review has a 15 word minimum.

Incredible Bio On A Great Saint

In place of historical facts; The author is bent on delivering his opinion of Augustine, and more importantly, his depraved religion.

Just another anti-anything approach to history.

Incorrectly thought it was a biography of Augustine. Boring and hard to follow. Quit after an hour.
