Publisher's Summary

One pre-apocalyptic Earth. One desperate space mission to find a solution. One unexpected alien.

When Dr. Sakota Thorell signed onto the mission to scout out a new, habitable planet, she knew discovering extraterrestrial life was always a possibility. But she never expected to find an alien adrift in space, nor for that alien to be so intriguing. Sakota feels an instant and undeniable attraction to Astraeus, but he represents a million possibilities, and just as many threats.

There are others hunting Astraeus, and his rescue may cost Earth its last hope.

Outstanding Story!

I absolutely loved this sci-fi romance filled with adventure, suspense and action. There are quite a few surprises in this tale that you won’t see coming. In addition to the two awesome main characters, there are ancillary characters that you will initially hate and then come to respect and several that you will care about very much as you become fearful for their survival. Pre-Apocalyptic earth meets Aliens

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

Sci-fi is one of my fave genres, so this is a great novel for anyone that enjoys that type of book. It had a very mythological meet the future kind of feel to it!

The narrator did a great job of delivering the tale and making the listeners feel like we're taking the journey with them. Great character development and writing by the author.

Really Good Story

This book was really good, although to me not the typical paranormal romance. It was so funny when the men from the ship were trying to carry Astraeus and they thought he weighed about 400 pounds. Astraeus was so kind and gentle. You knew this when he shared his memories with Sakota. Rutledge was a horrible person, who gets what he deserves. What Astraeus said sums it up about humans: He said it disheartens him to see how poorly we treat each other and how shallow our people can become. We are an exasperating species. Love and compassion exist among us yet brilliant souls are treated like filth because of the color of their skin, geniuses are scorned because of their sexual orientation, wars are waged when one religion condemns another for not holding the same beliefs. It amazed Astraeus that humans are able to function when animosity runs rampant among humans. If only humans could see this. Everyone needs to read this book and take something from it. I would definitely recommend this book.

Steve Campbell did a good job with the narration.

A Pretty Good Book

Honestly I didn’t realize this was a romance book until about 1/3 the way in. But I continued on because I was a really good sci-fi book. The story was short but rather good in the story telling and science. I throughly enjoyed it and glad I finished it.

First Contact or Alien Armagedon?

When a space exploration ship encounters what appears to be a single, human male floating outside the ship's viewport, there are a lot of questions to be answered. Fortunately, their new guest can communicate with the ship's doctor. Unfortunately, the news he brings isn't good.
A bit romance, a bit xenophobic space marines, a LOT space invaders, this story is action packed, touchingly human and interesting from cover to cover.
I enjoyed the growing relationship between the doctor and the alien, the cast of supporting characters, the author's use of suspense and tension.
A good read for space horror story fans.

Sci-fi first contact romance: a tale of two halves

This story is very much a tale of two halves. When the humanoid alien Astraeus collides with a human space exploration ship, the crew are astonished that he could survive the vacuum of space but are frustrated over his refusal to communicate, except with one particular crew member, and his presence soon provokes conflict.

Personally, I found this part a bit slow, some of the characters a little wooden, and the eco morality background a bit heavy handed. I enjoyed the budding romance, though. The story soon gets more complex, however. Then, when the proverbial hits the fan the story really switches gear, becoming a rollicking fast-paced sci-fi action thriller, though still with the romance story line never far from the fore. To me, this is where the author really seems to get into her stride, and I loved it!

The universe meant for me to meet you.

Sakota Thorell is the medical examiner on a scientific research vessel, currently in the Andromeda Galaxy, when a man is seen floating outside of the vessel, wearing a torn black space suit. And he blinked! Brought on board the ship, it soon becomes obvious that the man, though in most ways very similar to an human, was, in fact, alien. Sakota names him Astraeus. She is both intellectually excited and physically attracted to him, a feeling he seems to reciprocate, although the security marines are very suspicious of him, suspecting a trick.

Astraeus is both a space thriller and a love story, as well as a first contact situation. Good idea but very clunky in it's presentathion. The writing is uninspired and predictable, the conversation stilted and characterisation superficial, unfortunately. The narration by the very pleasant sounding Steve Campbell, in part manages to rescue it with good intonation, enthusiastic delivery and excellent individual character voicings. It was a good performance.

I was fortunate in being freely gifted a complimentary copy of Astraeus by the rights holder after I requested it via Audiobook Boom. Thank you for that. Whilst enjoyable enough, it could have been so much better with thoughtful editing and more attention given to make the characters real. But it was sufficiently exciting to draw the reader through to the end even if the old prejudices are given full and uninhibited range from the beginning. Quite fun, especially for those who enjoy slightly twisted love stories, but otherwise not a book that I would recommend.

Good sci fi with elements of romance

I quite enjoyed Astraeus, even though romances aren't usually my thing. I would say Astraeus is an intelligently written book, with many good ideas and concepts portrayed by the author, Haley Cavanagh. At times I found myself wanting to listen to more to find out what would happen next. I really enjoyed the scientific elements and details of the book, and who doesn't like a good exploration story? Overall I would give this book 3.5 out of 5, and I would probably listen to the sequel.

Steve Campbell does a good job as the narrator, with both male and female characters.

The author provided this book in return for an honest review.

good in a cringy way...

the introduction and first couple of hours are great despite it being a tale as old as time, but then the writing leaves the story to focus on the romance that, in my eyes, should have been a subplot, not the driving part of the story...
the romance is well written though, so no complaints there :)

Steve Campbell does a great job voicing the cast, his female voices are just as believable as his male and they are destinct enough that there is never any doubt as to whom is speaking.
great job
