Publisher's Summary

It’s been over six months since the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano. Alex and Darla have been staying with Alex’s relatives, trying to cope with the new reality of the primitive world so vividly portrayed in Ashfall, the first book in this trilogy.

It’s also been six months of waiting for Alex’s parents to return from Iowa. Alex and Darla decide they can wait no longer and must retrace their journey into Iowa to find and bring back Alex’s parents to the tenuous safety of Illinois.

But the landscape they cross is even more perilous than before, with life-and-death battles for food and power between the remaining communities. When the unthinkable happens, Alex must find new reserves of strength and determination to survive.

the narrator is horrible

authors should never read their own novels. there are rare exceptions like The Ables, but this guy is horrible. the first book was interesting and I suffered through this narrators whiney and depressing voice, but this 2nd novel the guy' voice sounds completely different yet much worse. He puts the emPHAsis on the wrong syLABil and pronounces words like dandelion dandeeeelion. All of his character voices sound the same, bad. I wish they would re-record this with a new narrator... I suggest reading it yourself. I would like to know what happens in the third, but nope, Can't listen to this dude for another 11 hours. :(

Great story ruined by the narration.

This series is one of my favorites. I have read the books and listened to the audio books. It is a realistic and entertaining look at this country and the people in it if tragedy threw us into a dystopian world. However, Mike Mullen has no business narrating. His amazing writing abilities don't translate at all into any sort of talent narrating. What should have been an engaging and entertaining experience of listening to his well-written story just became a test of my will and ability to endure his amateurish reading.

Read this one, don't listen. The story is good!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED the first book. And this one was also full of adventure, survival and a good story line. It just fell a little short for me. The writing had some minor glitches, in my opinion, and the author narrated it himself, which affected my overall opinion. Narrators can really make or break a book. A professional actor can add voices and emotion to a story that help bring it to life. I would give Ashen Winter a 3.5 stars if I could, because I do feel it's better than a 3. It just didn't grab me like I want 4 & 5 star books to do. Still, I'm going to read the third book in the series. I need to know what happened to the likable characters! :)

Poor narration

Poor narration. Story was ok. It does not make me want to read the 3rd book in the series.

Why ruin this series with horrible voice acting?!

I have listened to this series a couple of times before, its easily one of my favorite series, but I hate the narration.
I own this series on google play books and would use accessibility mode to have it read to me while I worked, it was robotic and very monotone, but even then I would prefer it to this narrator. I know a lot of people don't like the authors to be the narrators, but I normally don't mind, in fact, I love that Neil Gaiman reads his own books, but someone at Tanglewood should have told Mike Mullin he sucks as a voice actor. I can get past the flat reading and every character sounding the same, I got past that in google play days, but hearing him suck in a breath before every line DRIVES ME INSANE. There are times when the story is good enough to block it out, but once I hear it, I can't stop hearing it. As other reviews have said, the way he pronounces words is also quite annoying, but I can live with it. It's said that the same mind that made me love this series is connected to the mouth that test's that love.

Tanglewood, please re-record these last two books again with Kirby Heyborne, and fire whoever didn't have the courage to tell Mike Mullen he has no business behind a mic.

Waste of money for audible version

Disappointed I bought this. Going to ask audible to return my money. There is no way you could enjoy this story having mike read it. It’s just awful. So gave everything one star. Read the book! They are pretty good. I’ve read them twice but do not buy this.

Narration ruins excellent story

I've read the digital books in this series before, and loved them. I was super excited to find them on audible, and I tore through book one in a few days. Now, for book two, the narration is done by the author. It's HORRIBLE. I can not listen to this diy style, low quality, heavy breathing. Is this okay? Like seriously, he is out of breath every sentence, and I'm so preoccupied being annoyed and concerned that I lasted about thirty seconds. There's $16 I will never see again.

WHERE’S THE LAST NARRATOR??

Dear God, I loved these books so much physically reading them. I simply fell in love with the way the first narrator portrayed them. Now you go and change it up. No offense, Chap, but stick to writing the books. It was already started with the last guy, you should have left it as such. - Was Not Ready.

I love this series to this day

I start my journey with this book in middle school where I struggled with reading, but once I read this book series I was hooked. I recently wanted something to listen too while working and remembered this series, I've fallen back in love with it. I hope Mike keeps making these books because it fills me with inspiration to create evertime I listen/read this series.

p.s Message to Mike mullin, I once had an online video call with you as a class at grain valley Missouri, but I never got to ask the hundreds of questions I wanted to ask, so if you'd ever be willing to let me ask let me know and thank you for this series

Good book, terrible narration

Mike Mull8n is a solid author and GARBAGE narrator. Utterly kills the momentum and irritates throughout.
