Publisher's Summary

A dozen women join a secret 1850s Arctic expedition - and a sensational murder trial unfolds when some of them don't come back.

Eccentric Lady Jane Franklin makes an outlandish offer to adventurer Virginia Reeve: take a dozen women, trek into the Arctic, and find her husband's lost expedition. Four parties have failed to find him, and Lady Franklin wants a radical new approach: put the women in charge.

A year later, Virginia stands trial for murder. Survivors of the expedition willing to publicly support her sit in the front row. There are only five. What happened out there on the ice?

Set against the unforgiving backgdrop of one of the world's most inhospitable locations, USA Today best-sellng author Greer Macallister uses the true story of Lady Jane Franklin's tireless attempts to find her husband's lost expedition as a jumping-off point to spin a tale of bravely, intrigue, perseverance and hope.

Not what I thought it would be.

This story had so much potential in the beginning. Sadly it got bogged down with a lot of unnecessary plotlines that were never resolved. I find it hard to believe that one of the characters would allow the leader of the expedition to be hung for murder when their testimony would set her free. The scenes in the courtroom were amazing, especially the final one! I wish the rest of the book was as good. The ending was not satisfying.

Comments from a reader

Not good. The author wrote on topics she should not have. Felt uncomfortable reading it. There is a hole in the storyline.

One of the silliest books I've ever read

The author knows nothing about mid-19th century mores, and almost any reader could have told her that for a ship captain to abandon paid passengers, especially females, on any shore, let along a hostile arctic environment, is against maritime law, and the captain and his crew would have been charged with murder in the case of resulting deaths. The entire premise of the story was bupkess.

Excellent choice for Women’s History Month

Well done. I didn’t want to stop listening. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of women. They can be their own best advocates as well as their own worst enemies. Still true today.
