Publisher's Summary

Two police officers are about to head home after a long night shift when they receive one last call. En route to investigate, the patrol car spins off the road, killing one of the exhausted cops and leaving the other in critical condition. Detective Peter Diamond is assigned to look into the case. His supervisor is desperately hoping Diamond will not discover the officers were at fault. Instead Diamond discovers something even worse - a civilian on a motorized tricycle was involved in the crash and has been lying on the side of the road for hours. Diamond administers CPR, but the man's fate is unclear.

Diamond becomes suspicious of the civilian victim and begins a private inquiry that leads to a trail of uninvestigated deaths. As the man lingers on life support, Diamond must wrestle with the fact that he may have saved the life of a serial killer.

A bit confusing but clever

I love Simon Preble and always enjoy his narration. The story was a little more convoluted than other Peter Diamond books but it was very cleverly done and demonstrated that, indeed, sometimes older is wiser.

Complicated

If you can follow a plot line with multiple characters, you just might enjoy this police procedural. Simon Prebble narrates beautifully, although, even with my volume in the highest settibg, I sometimes had trouble hearing him.

My Favorite Peter Diamond Book

I've read a number of earlier books in this series. I liked them all, some better than others. This book is the 16th in the series and, for me, the best one yet!

The plot is Inventive and different from anything else I've read. I'm reluctant to say more - I don't want to spoil the surprises. It was difficult for me to stop listening because I couldn't imagine what was coming next.

Peter Diamond seems to have mellowed a little. He isn't quite as abrasive as he was in some earlier books. Time has mellowed him.

This isn't "action packed", but the pace is steady. There are no "gory details" or rude language.

If you've enjoyed other books in this series I think you'll like this one.

Couldn't hold my interest. Returned

Normally enjoy the series, and think the narrator is excellent but somehow this was just too far fetched without having a driving plot to carry it along. I don't expect high literature from this series but somehow the multiple detective theme bogged down the plot here so it wasn't even entertaining.

another good story in the series

it takes an unusual story to catch me by surprise but this is one formula I've never heard of the author weaves a wonderful tale. it's a blend of old characters and a whole group of new ones. it's a typical format in the sense that he has some prequels that give the background for the story before the investigation begins and there's some clues throughout the story of different characters but ultimately it's very difficult to figure it out. the performance was well done as in all of his books it's very difficult for a performer to have different voices for the wide range of characters that he has.

Another fine mystery. It begins so well with just a hint of a question about death. I was just clueless :-) Then I wasn't.

Could be the best of this stellar series

Wonderful twisty plot and tremendous performance by Simon Prebble. I listened to this a year ago, enjoyed it immensely. Yesterday I was without a credit but wanted a good mystery. I picked this from my Audible library, remembering how much I had liked it. Well, once again I had to listen all the way through, hardly stopping. Lovesey's plot is so clever and so amusingly written that he fooled me again...I still couldn't figure out who dun it until just before the reveal. As added delights, Lovesey's Bath is wonderfully evoked, and he also treats us to a collection of little surprises along the journey, including purloined priceless antique dresses, a cream tea with good company and home baked scones, and a wistful crew of elderly steam railroad buffs who add charm and atmosphere to the experience of this mystery ride. I had a painful medical treatment yesterday and Lovesey, Prebble and Hornsby the invented cat diverted me from the resulting discomfort. Many thanks to Audible for this great listening treat.

Great Story. Classic Peter Diamond at his best!!

Peter Lovesey and Simon Prebble make an incredible team. Lovesey’s ability to summon the best out of his characters to draw you in is at its best in Another One Goes Tonight: Peter Diamond. Brilliant!!
