""Unexpected and subtle...delicious and thought-provoking."" — New Scientist

For fans of Never Let Me Go and My Dark Vanessa, a powerful, provocative novel about the relationship between a female robot and her human owner, exploring questions of intimacy, power, autonomy, and control.

Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.

She’s learning, too.

Doug says he loves that Annie’s AI makes her seem more like a real woman, so Annie explores human traits such as curiosity, secrecy, and longing. But becoming more human also means becoming less perfect, and as Annie’s relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder: Does Doug really desire what he says he wants? And in such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

""Annie Bot is a book to hold close to your heart when the walls start closing in."" — Washington Post

Not your average AI
It would be tempting to think this is a story you’ve heard before: a robot created solely for human subservience and sexual gratification wrestles with the complexities of free will and personhood. But you’d be missing out on one heck of a story—because Sierra Greer’s version manages a fresh, unexpected take on AI and all the hopes and fears we ascribe to it. What results is a highly plausible vision of what our eventual coexistence may look like. The very intelligent yet painfully naive Annie is not like any AI character I’ve encountered before—she’s messier, more adrift. Jennifer Jill Araya did her homework for this performance: Her subtle shifts in cadence between types of bots, as well as capturing the range of human affects we don throughout our day, added such dimension to this story. —Sam D., Audible Editor

What a fun adventure into the inner thoughts & mind of a robot. The premise and first 50ish% of this book were great, but then it just felt like it lost its way. There could have been so many more things added to this storyline to make it great, but sadly it fell short and just trudged along to the end.

Good, but not great

I enjoyed it a lot, the ending felt rushed but it’s ok since I enjoyed it so much.
It made me so sad at times, only few books achieve that. The narrator was great too.

I couldn’t stop listening

The first 25% of this book makes me uncomfortably concerned for the author. Is she writing this story because she is/was emotionally abused by a partner and experienced gaslighting and excessive controlling behavior?
I wonder if the story is autobiographical and she is Annie. If so, I feel bad for the pain she has experienced.

Is Sierra Greer projecting?

Narrator, Jennifer Jill Araya was spectacular! Listened to the entire book in one day. I’ll be listening to this again. Just stunning. Dialogue natural, Annie’s internal thoughts felt like a secret. Sierra Greer is a genius with dialogue, feelings. Uncomfortable, suspenseful. Amazing!

Phenomenal and completely new

Good lord this seems like another manual for abusive behavior, contributing to the culture of abuse. Everyone who listens to this needs to listen to, "Why Does He do That," by Lundy Bancroft next. .

normalises the culture of abuse

The story is interesting and unique. Lots to think about as you listen. Made me think hard about technology and AI and how both are powerful and dangerous; especially for and against women. The story made me sad because of how accurate it is in terms of how women are treated in our society. Even robot women. Not just in America, but throughout the world.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

A variation on slavery- how will android feel? The domestic abuse story is simplified by the woman being a robot: there is no need to explain why she is in this situation. This is not how an android would think, though. The author describes herself yanked out of the modern world and stuffed into an android shell. There is the usual trope is that men are inherently evil. The narrator can't do male voices well- they are always menacing or severely constipated. Otherwise she sounds fine.

Mild erotica, decent story. Not sci-fi.

Was hoping for more depth. Irritated at how long i had listen to a bad man treating. a female character badly.

But narration was superb.

Stereotypes of intimate partner violence

Annie Bot is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time.

This book is about so much more than a sex robot. Annie's depth was miles below the surface. Her progression in thinking and the evolution of her emotions were so intriguing.

I was a trillion percent riveted by how well this author developed Annie.

READ IT!

There are sex scenes in this book, but they are mild and not too spicy.
