Publisher's summary

Even as he fights for their future...

With the world still rebuilding after massive dragon attacks, famous singer Star isn’t willing to rely on a stranger to protect her family, though dragon shifter Lachlan is difficult to resist.

Something about him is strangely familiar, but she doesn’t understand why. He’s already helped Star rescue her sister from a recent abduction, but trust doesn’t come easy when his kind has nearly hunted her race to extinction.

When her sister’s kidnapper launches another violent attack, Star has no choice but to accept Lachlan’s aid. But no matter that he’s stepped up to protect her, she’ll never allow the ancient Scottish dragon into her heart.

They’re bound by the past.

Lachlan lost the woman he was meant to mate, millennia ago. Unable to live in a world without her, his pain drove him to hibernation. He never thought he would move on - until Star. He’s well aware the feisty shifter is his new destiny, so if tailing her to New Orleans is what he has to do to be near her, then so be it.

When Star is attacked, Lachlan resolves to protect her at all costs. And he won’t have to do it alone. It will take Lachlan, his clansmen, and Star’s misfit band of friends to rain fiery vengeance down upon their enemy if she and her sister are to ever be truly free. Only then can he claim her and discover the shocking truth that lies buried in their past.

This is the first book in a new series.

Great!

This was an exciting story. :) Lachlan is a scottish dragonshifter and he knows Star is his mate but she makes him work for it. Lol. This is a spinoff to the Darkness series and we see some characters we have met before. :)

New series and more dragons!!

I'm so happy that we are back into this world again. This is a spinoff of the Darkness series and I love seeing some of my favorite characters again. Especially the ancient dragon shifters.

Out of all the dragon shifter books I have read, Katie Reus has created my absolute favorite dragons. They are dominant, territorial, and extremely possessive of their mates. Plus, they are so old, they come off a bit quirky in today's world.

Lachlan's intensity right from the very beginning had me sold. Especially since all that intensity was aimed at Star. He proved he would do anything for her. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a hero.

What Star was a mystery for most of the book. I did guess it, but I will admit I doubted my guess a couple of times. That just made it more fun. She was cool character. I don't normally like Alpha females but she was strong without being in your face about it. Plus she had some cool powers.

I loved it and I want more. I'm glad this is the start of a new series. There are so many characters still to explore in this world.

I needed a little more chemistry...

This was a good paranormal romance story. I enjoyed the main characters, side characters, and the storyline. Star and Lachlan's story had action, suspense, mystery and some steamy scenes. However, I would have loved this story more if there was just a bit more chemistry between the main characters. I wanted to feel that deep connection as they were mates and I didn't feel that. Otherwise, this was a good paranormal story and the narrator did a fantastic job. I look forward to more books from this author and narrator.

The Return of the Ancients

Star is a famous singer, but her career is a means to an end. She's determined to rescue her sister who was kidnapped by a ruthless dragon shifter. By agreeing to performing at his fortified estate, she along with her team of shifters plan to free Aurora. Here Star finds her mate. Lachlan is an Ancient who went into hibernation when he lost his true love. Now he's back to lead his clan. What is the strong connection between Star and her Scottish dragon? Are her strange dreams actually memories of a lost love? Ancient Protector is an action packed story which takes place in our world after a massive dragon attack destroys life as we know it. The supernaturals are now in control. I was anxious to see what would happen next. Can Star open herself to love? She has endured so much. Lachlan is so powerful and his love is so strong. I knew that he would do whatever was necessary to protect Star and all those she cares about. This is the first book by Katie Reus in her new series. I'm already a fan. I loved her characters. The are both spunky and humorous. They make me want to know more about them. Also I liked that Star and Lachlan are equals. She's no damsel in distress. This book is filled with nonstop action which the audiobook highlights. I hope that I don't have to wait long for their next adventure. The Ancients are changing the world. Be prepared for what happens next.

4 stars

Loved the narrator and really loved Star and Lachlan. Loved the friendships. I could have rated it 5 stars but I had to stop listening at one point because of the info below.

There was one element that showed up between 2 males that was disgusting and didn't belong. It added nothing to the story and was just gross. I read MF only. I don't have interest in any other genre. To each their own but this wasn't even in a romantic setting it was gross.

Solid 3 stars almost 5 except for that stupid trope

I really enjoyed this. The FMC was great, smart, and a true strong lead. My only complaint is she is a virgin. I really reaaaallllyyyy wish we can stop that trope. A guy that’s thousands of years old who gets mad at the thought his mate has a sexual past GASP THE HORROR. But then to make the FMC a virgin. It’s just creepy to me. At one point she says “I’m so glad he’s not treating me like a freak” because she’s a virgin and I’m like???? Does anyone do that??? Sigh. So I removed 2 stars for that.

Ancient Protector (Ancients Rising 1)By Katie Reus

ANCIENT PROTECTOR (Ancients Rising #1) By Katie Reus
This is the start of a new series “Ancients Rising” and it is off to a great start. This is a spin off from the Darkness series and it features my personal favorites, the dragons. Lachlan is an ancient who went into hibernation for thousands of years when he lost his love. Star is a singer and when Lachlan woke up he was attracted to her the 1st time he heard her sing. She is on a quest to try to rescue her sister who had been kidnapped. Lachlan and Star are such completely lovable characters. This story brings us everything, drama, danger, intrigue, a sexy Scottish brogue accent, chemistry, devotion, and passion. We also get reconnected with some friends from the past. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. In the audio book Lauren Ezzo is the narrator. She does an excellent job. This is a 5 star read. Congrats Katie, on a winner!

Cheesy AF

This book started off well. After about 3.5 hours, things took a downturn to cheesy lines and mediocre AT BEST writing. At one point, the same paragraph was repeated twice.
Narrator - her main character - Star's narration was just fine. Male and most importantly the male Scottish accents were pretty atrocious. Kinda bummed I spent a credit on this.

Refreshing new find

The story is not your typical storyline. It was different yet entertaining with fun characters. The narrator made the story so much better. Her voice is not whiny or nasal. She does a great job at doing accents and male/ female characters.
