Powerful and oh so sexy!

A unique look at the inside of the Yakuza, the Japanese form of the mafia. Luce Potter is the untraditional head of the organization and not everyone is happy about that. The book is very sexy and Victoria Mei provides excellent narration to the plotline. Well done!

Sucks you in

This book sucked me in from the start. I could not stop listening to it. I was totally intrigued by the charcters and how they interacted with each other. I thought Luce was a dick for most of the book, but I loved her charcter and how she started to evolve during the book. Brooke was had me feeling like she needed to be rescued a few times but she kept on trucking. The tension between the two main charcters made it so much better. The excellent narration by Victoria Mei gave it just that extra to make this a top ten book for the year. For me anyway.

Audio changed my enjoyment for the better.

I read this book about five years ago, then set it down and didn’t really think about it again. I never continued the story, and truthfully I probably never would have if I hadn’t listened to the audiobook. The story is definitely solid but, for a person like myself who isn’t usually captured by drama and primarily reads romance books, somewhat forgettable. That’s not a criticism of the book but a mismatch in preference.

The audiobook absolutely changed that for me. This was my first time listening to a full book from this narrator, but the delivery of the story completely enraptured me. I found myself listening to it when I would normally not even bother turning it on, but grabbing ten more minutes of listening was worth not having to wait another few hours. The cadence of her voice and the different voices she uses for each character has made me instantly a fan, and I will be looking into the other books she’s narrated.

This book involves bondage (as well as other BDSM themes), as it’s an important part of some of the characters’ lives, and I think it was done tastefully and respectfully. I also felt that the relationship between each of the characters - and not just the romantic ones - felt genuine and real. Sometimes relationships shift quickly and unexpectedly, especially when life is full of intensity as it is for most of these characters, and that shift was represented well.

Some of the scenes were quite graphic and gritty, but it fit the story very well. I won't say that this book has made me a fan of drama or action stories, but I was able to enjoy the narration of it better than I'd previously enjoyed the written version. Maybe that's just my own tastes changing over time, or maybe hearing it out loud made all the difference - you can judge that for yourself when you listen to it.

As soon as the last few lines of this book were delivered I was already downloading the second book, which I’d previously ignored completely. Sometimes experiencing a story in a different media is all it takes to completely change how much a person enjoys the story, and for me this is that story. I would casually recommend the book itself, but I strongly recommend the audio version.

Wow

I could not stop listening! It was sexy and intriguing. The plot had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The sex scenes were super hot. The narrator did not disappoint. She did an amazing job with the different character voices. You always knew who was talking. Definitely one of my favorite books so far. Can’t wait to start the second book in the series.

Great start to the series

Victoria Mei is a wonderful narrator. I enjoy any book that is narrated by her.

This is a well written story about the inner workings of the Yakuza and the rise of a woman to power in a traditionally male dominated world.

The romance in the story is slow burn/minimal. This book is really setting the scene for whats to come. If you like "mafia" books you will probably enjoy that aspect of this book. Overall it was an enjoyable listen and I'm looking forward to book 2.

intriguing and sizzling story

This is a great story, I enjoyed very much the action, the intrigue and of course the sizzling, sexy scenes.

The fact that the Yakuza boss is a powerful woman is one of the things that draw me to the story. The chemistry between the main characters is so palpable that you can almost hear the sparks every time they were close to each other. The plot and the characters are very well developed. I loved this book completely.

Victoria Mei did a great job with the voices and emotions. She conveyed perfectly well the story.

Can’t wait for book 2. I recommend this book completely

Sizzling and Intriguing

Business owner/Japanese crime syndicate boss Luce Potter lives life on her own terms. After her grandfather hands over the family business, she must prove he was right in choosing her to lead. She's enjoying stunning success on the business side - but with leadership in the organization traditionally held by men, she must also show she has the stomach and ruthlessness required to make the hard choices. Investigative journalist Brooke Erickson has a story she's chasing for her financial magazine, and she has Luce Potter in her sights. After a literal-run-in with Brooke, enigmatic Luce reluctantly agrees to grant her an interview, but in the process, both women get much more than they bargained for. It's fun to have a badass female mafia leader in lesfic - why lie? And Luce doesn't fit into any sort of box. She's as comfortable in leathers on her motorcycle as she is in dresses and stilettos. She also engages in a little BDSM - which certainly adds more spice to the mix. I also appreciate that she is multi-cultural and what that brings to the story. The audiobook is narrated by Victoria Mei, who is just right for the material. She's got that wonderful, low tone to her voice that elicits visceral feelings in the listener - particularly during intimate scenes. I felt like the book was something of a slow build - and by the end, I was anxiously awaiting the outcome. This is the first of a three book series and I look forward to continuing the story with The Lies That Bind.

Wow

This is the first F/F “mafia” book. I loved the dynamic between the characters. It’s very refreshing seeing a female in charge of the family business. Good strong characters with an excellent storyline. Victoria is perfect for this narration.
