Publisher's Summary

Hugo Award winner Harry Turtledove is the master of alternate history. In American Front he envisions World War I as it may have been if fought on American soil. The United States and Germany clash with the Confederacy, France, and Britain as the machines of modern warfare litter the landscape with carnage. Meanwhile, oppressed southern blacks head toward a fateful confrontation.

Turtledove does it again, Guidall as well.

Would you listen to American Front again? Why?

I would. It's an impressive book.

What other book might you compare American Front to and why?

It's just as good as How Few Remain, and also better in some ways.

Which scene was your favorite?

The introduction to Jake Featherston.

Who was the most memorable character of American Front and why?

Featherston. We get some background on him. Custer too, but to me, he was annoying.

Any additional comments?

A must-have for any alternate history or Harry Turtledove fan.

Incredible Story, Pretty Good Narrator

The story is incredible. The multi-protagonist approach is absolutely the best way to tell alternate history. The varying perspectives give an incredibly holistic view of the universe Harry Turtledove has created. The narrator could have done more to distinguish these characters with more differing voices, although he already does a great job doing so.

Cassette Recording?

Great story. Great performance by Guidall, as usual... but the recording is a direct lift from the CASSETTE tapes, without any post-processing. How is this obvious? "This marks the end of side 1, cassette 1. please turn over to side 2."

Historical Parallel of Fantastic Detail

I love history and feel this book and series are a fantastic way to learn the history of WWI and the world and people as it was at that time but through a mirror glass into another world that never was but very well could have been. Turtledove mixes numerous narratives of soldiers and sailors, powerful historical figures and fictional common men and women into an amazing story of a world that never was at the beginning of the 20th century. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history, science fiction, or fantasy as it is a mix of all three. Loved it.

Average Turtledove

Mostly paint by numbers WWI alt-history. A few too many subplots. Predictable but worth a read.

interesting alternate history

a fun look into what could have been. lots of subtle history jokes within. a bit hard to come to terms with who all the characters are at first, since they are not famous figures like the previous book. but once you get it down, there is a great deal to enjoy about the book. starting part 3 now

Wonderful

First, the Bad. As with the last book Harry Turtledove has his particular writing habit that can be extremely repetitive and tiring to read/listen to. The book has repeated certain tidbits of information more than once although not very often so it’s not really noticeable. The story can be dry in certain places but is ultimately working to a larger point so it’s forgivable. The author has a bad habit of using something similar to “affirmation of believed or known facts”. He will use certain phrases including but not limited to “no doubt about it” “no two ways about it” and “well there was nothing you could do about that”. These are used repetitively in the story. The good. Harry Turtledove has created a wonderful manifestation of wat a different world would be like! Very believable and a masterful work of fiction. No complaint of mine has made me less interested in the story and I can’t wait for the next book.

Masterful Storytelling!

The concept is great and the story is good, but George Guidall narration is UNPARALLELED! He could make an organic chemistry text book entertaining!
