Story
Olivia LeClair's experiment with speed dating is not going well. First there was the nasty encounter with the date from hell who tried to murder her and now the mysterious Harlan Rancourt - long believed dead - sits down at her table and tells her she's the only one who can help him locate the legendary Vortex lab. This is not what Olivia had in mind when she signed up for the Four Event Success Guaranteed package offered by the dating agency. She doesn't have much choice, though, because her psychic investigation firm works for the mysterious Foundation.

The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Publisher's Summary
Two psychics plunge into a dark world of deadly secrets in this second installment of the Fogg Lake trilogy by New York Times best-selling author Jayne Ann Krentz.
North Chastain possesses a paranormal talent that gives him the ability to track down the most dangerous psychic criminals. When his father suddenly falls into a coma-like state, North is convinced it was caused by a deadly artifact that traces back to the days of a secret government program known only as the Bluestone Project. North knows his only hope of saving his father is to find the artifact. He is good when it comes to tracking down killers, but to locate the relic hes going to need help from a psychic who knows the shadowy world of obsessive collectors, deceptive dealers, and ruthless raiders....
With her reputation in ruins after a false accusation, antiques expert Sierra Raines is looking for a fresh start. She turns to the murky backwaters of the paranormal artifacts trade, finding and transporting valuable objects with a psychic provenance. When North Chastain approaches her for help, Sierra takes him on as a client, though not without reservations. North represents the mysterious Foundation, the secretive organization established to police the underworld populated by psychic criminals and those, like Sierra, who make a living in the shadows of that world.
North and Sierra soon find themselves at the scene of the Incident, which occurred decades ago in Fogg Lake. The town and its residents were forever changed by the disaster in the nearby Bluestone Project labs. The pair unearths shocking truths about what happened that fateful night, but they are playing with firesomeone in town knows what theyve discovered and will do anything to make sure the secrets stay buried.

Nice segue
The beginning off this Fogg Lake series was confusing. A whole separate group of psychic conspirators- why? But I guess one of the main themes through all of Jayne’s worlds is that psychic talents are normal and not everyone can be part of an ancient secret organization so I decided to go with it. Both of these books seem a little disjointed and at a sort of high school level of sophistication. If you’ve read many of Jayne’s books you will recognize a number of familiar plot devices but that doesn’t keep you from enjoying the experience. I think I would have preferred to read it though, because the narrator nearly does. Her reading is adequate with only a few misspoken words (why don’t they fix that in production-I can’t be the only one who noticed), but her breathy choppy delivery sounds much too young. I get that some of Jayne’s usual narrators are getting too old for these stories-Barbara Rosenblatt for example so a new narrator for this series was a good plan, but this one sounds like a high school kid. That said, she does a good job of differentiating the characters and her male voices aren’t bad either.
All in all a medium effort by JAK with a nice preview of the next book that means I’ll go on with the series.

Disappointing
If you like to Listen to 17-year-old reading harlequin type romances, then you will enjoy this. If not don’t bother, it’s a waste of money and time. There was some plot however but not enough to save it. I’m normally a huge fan but won’t be listening to this one again.

Nasal Narrator
I love Jayne Ann Krentz and these stories with psychic powers are fun. The narrator though almost ruined it all for me. She just couldn't pull off the men's voices and they all sounded like teenage boys who haven't hit puberty yet. I don't know if the narrator was sick or what because it didn't bother me as much in the 1st one of the series she narrated. Just something to think about.

Narration did not help
Have read books by this author. Thought this would be an okay listen but, for me, it was spoiled by poor narration. All the character voices, both male and female, were just irritating and somewhat little girlish. I jumped chapters here and there to see whether that was consistent. Unfortunately, it was the case. I am returning this one.
