Publisher's Summary

A dramatic new Alien novel, as Weyland-Yutani seeks to recover from the failure of Hadley's Hope and successfully weaponize the Xenomorphs

With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place...the facility known as "The Cold Forge".

Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests. For Dorian, this is the most unforgivable of sins. When found, the perpetrator will be eliminated with extreme prejudice. If unmasked, though, this person may be forced to destroy the entire station...and everyone on board. That is, if the Xenomorphs don't do the job first.

Great story line

Nice to see the aliens as a part of the story but more interesting sub plots taking center stage. And the narrator was OUTSTANDING.

Awesome

I am a big alien fan and this book definitely delivered. Dorian was awesome he really carried the story along with blue. I loved the back and forth dialogue so much I must have listened to the chapters several times because it was so engaging. This is I think the best audio book I have listened to. The aliens were definitely scary also.Dorian was an asshole but a much needed one also. The narrator was very good and it seems all characters came from different voices.

Dorian made for a flawless story

I am a huge Alien fan. I have many of the books. Seen the movies over and over. The Cold Forge is a masterpiece. Dorian is the perfect antagonist. There are few fleshed out antagonist leave a long lasting impression on me.

1. Annie Wilkes
2. Patrick Bateman
3 Dorian

Alex White did an excellent job with his characters. I felt for Lucy, Blue, joviar, and especially Dorian. Michael Braun was excellent. Please please team up again.

Hey Alex can we get a prequel for Dorian? He is pure narcissistic evil. The definitive sociopath. I actually about the aliens for a brief moment to delve into the mind of a monster.

Excellent, great book. Had me on the edge of my seat for the whole 11 hours.

Great book! Great narrative!

So much fun to listen too! I liked the narrative. Any story where I'm actually like 'I can't wait to get back to my book to see what the jerk so and so does next' is a good book.

The Best Alien Book Yet

Truly loved the characters and their ambiguity. The Aliens were truly monstrous and written oh so well. Thank you Alex White for bringing the horror back to aliens.

The best Alien novel ever written, bar none.

The Cold Forge is the best Alien novel yet written. It is even superior to Steel Egg, and is good enough to stand on its own even without its association with the Aliens mythos. I recommend it without hesitation. Kudos to Michael Braun for his superb narration, including female voices (which have been a problem for male narrators in the past, who too often make the mistake of actually attempting to imitate a woman's voice rather than focusing on conveying the character's intent in their dialogue). I must also give author Alex White credit for successfully incorporating elements of the new Prometheus/Covenant mythos regarding alien biology (specifically the black goo) into the larger Aliens franchise without compromising its established lifecycle.

Pretty good addition to the series

This book was somewhat similar in plot to the 4th Alien movie but brings some fun new elements to the table. It seems to be more about the humans than the threat posed to them by the aliens. The book started out pretty slowly but, once it picked up, it’s intensity continued to increase. The narration was top notch.

well realised story in the alien universe

Great book that really gets what makes the franchise so popular (unlike the recent movies) and was performed well. I liked the nod to Alien Isolation too (that game needs a sequel !). Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend.

Great read, but...

The characters are all pretty unlikeable. It wasn't until the last third of the book that you finally feel like there's someone to root for - and that's more of a strong reaction against the villain, rather than any love for the protagonist. If you can resign yourself to that fact, this is actually a really good book. A fast paced, exciting book. I enjoyed this over any of the full cast dramatisations I've listened to, which I have always enjoyed.

Thrilling Sci-fi!!!

I’ve enjoyed all the Alien stories on Audible starting with Out Of The Shadows and especially John Chancer’s narrations but The Cold Forge, for me, is the greatest most exciting and wonderfully sci-fiction experience I’ve ever known. The characters, plot, sub-plot, detail of environment and technology is just in a league of its own. Truly, if Scott could make this it could be the the most celebrated sci-fi movie of all time. Brilliant story telling and ingenious characterisations all compelling and unstoppable. Fantastic! White is a genius.

Excellent characters squandered

The writer adds two new compelling but deliciously despicable characters to the Aliens universe, however the narrative--once it gets going--is pretty run of the mill, and told in a VERY distracting present tense.

unlikeable characters

firstly the narrator was brilliant, but the story not so great the aliens don't feature in it until over half way through the story and none of the characters were likeable I didn't care if anyone lived or died, I honestly hoped they'd all die but this is just my opinion for what it's worth.

Brilliant.

I’ve been waiting for a fresh and inspired new story in the Aliens universe and this was it. Not connected or tagging along with any other stories..sitting nicely somewhere in the Amanda Ripley/Isolation era..tho she’s not a character. It’s a story that depicts humans as being the worse species and juxtaposes morality and ethics with very vulnerable people. This story..just..nails it.

Brilliant addition to the Alien lore

From start to finish, this is a fantastic story. It is as far removed from the 'Ripley' of it as it could be as is focuses solely on the prospect of what Weyland-Yutani do when they successfully acquire Alien specimens.

An Alternative Story

To date, all Alien stories, via film or book have begun with humans thrown into an Alien environment, with zero knowledge of what they're facing. Usually led by a Weyland Yutani corporate suit and followed by marines or mercenaries.
So us viewers are witnessing the same cliché slow pace reveals we've seen over and over. Acid for blood, face huggers, chest bursters, queen egg layer.. Etc..

Cold forge was a breath of fresh air for story telling/cannon.
Setup in a space facility that are studying Xenomorphs. We already have the basics covered. It's just about survival now.
The characters are convincing, and well fleshed out and for once I didn't entirely dislike the Weyland suit, Dorian. Who knew?!

The writer also cover some interesting new aspects of the Alien cannon, which ties into Promethus/Covenant.

I do wish they remake this as an Audible drama or even a film adaptation.

Recommend the credit :)

Great expansion

Fantastic expansion into an ever growing world. Captures the essence of terror that the Xenomorph should, yet is just slightly different to accurately portray how the Aliens are different according to their original hosts.

Hard to tell who the real predator is...corporate or alien

Riveting story from the opening paragraph, and the ending was satisfying, but I would never have guessed it even up to it’s denouement.

Basic story is, The Cold Forge is a scientific research outpost of Weyland Yutani where they are experimenting with Alien ‘eggs’, looking to find ways of controlling them. What the company doesn’t know though, is that at least one of the resident scientists is not what they seem.

Enter Corporate Representative, Dorian Suttler, “toe-cutter” extraordinaire. An arrogant, self-possessed narcissist who takes pleasure in others fear and discomfort.

Rather than being afraid of the aliens, he admires them....especially after they are freed by a rogue project.

Sit back and watch the body-count.

This book is very much as good as the original that started the whole thing. The suspense, the horror, the way it worms it’s way into your psyche and makes you look over your shoulder the further into the book you get.

....perfectly narrated by Michael Braun

Worthy addition to Alien and Aliens.

wow! this was fantastic! the story was totally engaging, human (and android) characters are as interesting to hear about as the scenes with the creatures themselves, and performed excellently throughout. Side note, it’s great to have a new alien story that doesn’t feel the need to involve Ellen Ripley in some weird far-fetched way. Just new, exciting characters! very much a worthy addition to the first two outstanding movies.
