Publisher's Summary

A dramatic new Alien novel, as Weyland-Yutani seeks to recover from the failure of Hadley's Hope and successfully weaponize the Xenomorphs

With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place...the facility known as "The Cold Forge".

Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests. For Dorian, this is the most unforgivable of sins. When found, the perpetrator will be eliminated with extreme prejudice. If unmasked, though, this person may be forced to destroy the entire station...and everyone on board. That is, if the Xenomorphs don't do the job first.

Not the best Alien book

I did not find any of the characters to be likeable, except Nick and he doesn't show up until near the end. The protagonists are awful people. The antagonist is annoying. It bothered me how the antagonist always seemed to get the drop on everyone. Annoying! Not as much of the Xenos as I expected. I particularly did not like the overly descriptive animal experiments. This book certainly does not even come close to the caliber of River of Pain and earlier alien books.

Why was this book called alien ?

The only thing that made this book listenable for me was the narrator, he was pretty good. Why was there so much attention given to the bureaucrat he was completely unlikable as a main character and a boring bad guy ? There wasn’t a single character I cared if they lived or not except for the android who I felt bad for because one of the main characters called blue was constantly violating him every chance she got and I guess your supposed to sympathize with her because she’s crippled . But in short she was a scum bag and not just because of what she did to Marcus . Oh I almost forgot about the aliens ( apparently that’s something I have in common with the author ) or the lack there of . When they were making a cameo appearance they felt shoehorned into the story and given minor details .

Pretty grim story with some unlikable characters

Hard to finish because it was hard to root for anyone. Blue was somewhat sympathetic and that was about it. The villan was good.

Hard to finish.

Unfortunately this book was hard to finish. The storyline was overly repetitive and way too much about the director. also the aliens were almost nonexistent in the book and didn't follow any of the normal habits of aliens in the canon.

Great SciFi

This was an excellent listen. You don’t have to be a die hard alien fan to enjoy Cold Forge. The science was well thought out and the story was fast paced. Michael Braun delivers a pitch perfect performance.

Awesome

I am a big alien fan and this book definitely delivered. Dorian was awesome he really carried the story along with blue. I loved the back and forth dialogue so much I must have listened to the chapters several times because it was so engaging. This is I think the best audio book I have listened to. The aliens were definitely scary also.Dorian was an asshole but a much needed one also. The narrator was very good and it seems all characters came from different voices.

Great story line

Nice to see the aliens as a part of the story but more interesting sub plots taking center stage. And the narrator was OUTSTANDING.

Great book! Great narrative!

So much fun to listen too! I liked the narrative. Any story where I'm actually like 'I can't wait to get back to my book to see what the jerk so and so does next' is a good book.

The Best Alien Book Yet

Truly loved the characters and their ambiguity. The Aliens were truly monstrous and written oh so well. Thank you Alex White for bringing the horror back to aliens.

Why can’t the movies be this good?

Absolutely brilliant story from the Alien universe. A creepy and intriguing tale that builds and builds, delivering tense thrills, suspense and action with characters you actually care about.

Superb book.

Do yourself a favour and go out and pick up a copy of Alien: The Cold Forge. From Aaron Percival here at Alien vs. Predator Galaxy, I award Alex White’s Alien: The Cold Forge a 10 out of 10.

A journey into the mind of Dorian Sudler

A very well crafted novel, with impressive attention to detail. This story nestles perfectly into the Alien universe, and expands on what we already know about the physiology of the Xenomorphs, and delves into the geneological science behind the species.

The narrator does a marvelous job in drawing you into minds the various characters. Although told from various narratives, the overall theme for me was an exploration into the mind of Dorian Sudler, and his interaction with the crew of the Cold Forge.

It maybe could have focused a bit more on the Aliens themselves, but this is really the only criticism I can find.

The novel also does well to show that although powerful and far reaching as Weyland Yutani is, there are rivals to its power and competition over the manipulation of the Xenomorphs.

Overall a great listen, with spine chilling suspense and gore aplenty, adding to the over all inevitably of impending doom you get from all the Alien novels and films.

Interesting plot and style, lacking in alien.

The story is well read, well paced and fits well in the overall galaxy of the alien stories. The issue for me was the amount of interaction with the aliens in depth. Without giving away spoilers it's hard to give specifics but I was hoping for more depth to the creatures and how they were studied etc. That said, this is a great listen with plenty of payoff.

A fantastic continuation of this series

Read a few of this series now, they follow a similar vein but are very different. The single narrator version in this approach works fantastically as the narrator's voice is ideal for this story. I will now look for the next one to read. Damn you Audible for getting me addicted!

Amateur and boring

The story is OK. It didn't add anything mind-blowing to the Alien series, and just felt like a rehash of what we've seen in the movies / comics, with a little twist here and there. There's a couple of interesting characters, but I didn't care about any of them enough to want them to survive. I won't spoil anything, but there's a lot of things that are either set up or happen that are far too contrived, which is frustrating.

I think the story would have been more interesting if the book had been written better. There's for too much use of 'like a...'. Almost everything that happens, instead of being described in compelling, immersive detail relevant to the situation / location / character, is just compared to being 'like' something far more derivative and less interesting. It got the point where it was actually distracting. Every time some event happened I was just waiting for the 'like a...' punchline to yank me out of the immersion. As already mentioned there's a fair few contrivances set up, and the writing feels amateur as a result because everything is so convenient - Thing Z happens because of Thing Y, because of Thing X; it's incredibly heavy handed.

Finally there's the performance. Michael Braun does a fantastic job of narrating the characters. But, I found he could not build tension as his delivery was quite robotic at times. This may have been a fault of the way the book is written rather than his ability. I would definitely not avoid a book narrated by him in future - and I think he did the best he could with the material given.

Overall I found this quite boring, and would recommend watching Aliens five times in a row, rather than waste 12hours on this.

A gripping thrill ride

Fantastic scene setting, character building and story telling come together to create an immersive world. If you are a fan of alien, this will pickle your gherkin. The narrators change of tone and pitch become totally different people in your minds eye and you will become duty bound to find out what happens to them!

Brilliant.

I’ve been waiting for a fresh and inspired new story in the Aliens universe and this was it. Not connected or tagging along with any other stories..sitting nicely somewhere in the Amanda Ripley/Isolation era..tho she’s not a character. It’s a story that depicts humans as being the worse species and juxtaposes morality and ethics with very vulnerable people. This story..just..nails it.

Worthy addition to Alien and Aliens.

wow! this was fantastic! the story was totally engaging, human (and android) characters are as interesting to hear about as the scenes with the creatures themselves, and performed excellently throughout. Side note, it’s great to have a new alien story that doesn’t feel the need to involve Ellen Ripley in some weird far-fetched way. Just new, exciting characters! very much a worthy addition to the first two outstanding movies.
