100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. Publisher's Summary
As a deputy commissioner for the ICC, Alan Decker’s job is to make sure the settlements on LV178 follow all the rules, keeping the colonists safe. But the planet known as New Galveston holds secrets, lurking deep beneath the toxic sands dubbed the Sea of Sorrows. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation has secrets of its own, as Decker discovers when he is forced to join a team of mercenaries sent to investigate an ancient excavation.
Somewhere in that long-forgotten dig lies the thing the company wants most in the universe - a living Xenomorph. Decker doesn’t understand why they need him, until his own past comes back to haunt him. Centuries ago, his ancestor fought the Aliens, launching a bloody vendetta that was never satisfied. That was when the creatures swore revenge on the Destroyer....Ellen Ripley.

The narrator has a very annoying habit of ending his sentences on an uptick. If you're sensitive to speech patterns, it's going to get under your skin fast. And the story is kind of weak in my opinion. I loved the first book in this series. This one disappointed.

Best of the New Alien Trilogy
If you enjoyed this book, you must hear the superb audio drama based o this book from Audible Studios. A full cast production with music and sound effects, it is superb and features added material. I personally think the added material should’ve been in the book. A must listen for Alien fans.
This book is a thrilling follow up to Tim Lebbon's "Alien Out of the Shadows." While set hundreds of years in the future, it ties into the first book in this trilogy. While Ripley is not featured in this story, one of her descendants is. Spoiler alert for those who haven't read the novel or don't want to know. The main protagonist, Alan Decker is an empath, who can feel the Alien hive's emotions. This is an Inspired Plot device that really delivers. This novel has all the hallmarks of the Alien films and would've made a great movie. Plenty of action, double crosses, and Wetland-Yutani Corporation at their usual cold, calculating best. It's very similar to Aliens, with mercenaries substituting for the marines, alien attacks, but this time the creatures can sense Ripley's descendant, Decker and the chase is on. Will Decker live? Will the company finally obtain an Alien specimen? That you will have to find out. An exciting, fast paced read. Great for fans of the Alien universe. I read this book using immersion reading, while listening to the audiobook. Narrator Jeff Harding did a good job, though the narration itself was a bit rote.

Excellent Adaptation
It's obvious that the author has gone out of his way to familiarize himself with the Aliens mythos. His descriptions of these monsters make you think they are right next to your about to bite your face off.
I especially like the twist of having the main protagonist have a "connection" to events of the past...as well as the Aliens themselves. can't wait to read the next one.

Pretty basic Alien story with a flawed premise
This is an Aliens-by-numbers story - someone is investigating an unusual site, comes across aliens, they spread and kill everyone. For no apparent reason, the main character of this book, Alan Decker, is said to be Ellen Ripley's ancestor, and the xenomorphs can sense this and seek out to take revenge on "the destroyer". The issue with this is that Ripley had one child, Amanda, and we know she died childless (Burke tells Ripley this in Aliens - though admittedly I wouldn't trust him to give me all the facts).
It feels like this angle was added to the story to make it more appealing in the same way as Out of the Shadows unwisely had Ripley in it. While this seems to have allowed the publishers to label these books as "canonical", it actually serves to ask serious questions about that claim. Well, not serious questions. Actually, there is more to life than this anally retentive attitude.
Decent book, read it if you like Aliens.

A lot of drawn out waffle
As a true fan of the Alien franchise, this edition is no addition at all. The author has done a long drawn out waffle, with an eye on bulky word count rather than true action. Cudnt finish this one, it was as exciting as watching paint dry. Before writing the review, out of curiosity, I jumped forward whole chapters, then more chapters - finally found some action way deep inside, way deep. But by doing so there's no point in the storyline, which negates any listener connection to the script.

Great story , irritating narration
Engaging story and an excellent addition to the Alien-verse.
An honest report causes a lot of trouble for a decendent of Ripley. All is not as it seems though. He is an empath and he's channeling the Aliens. So Weylan Yutani shanghai him and blackmail him into helping them locate and capture some aliens for them. If you're a fan of the genre then you'll love this. But read the book, unless you have a low threshold for agravation that is.
For me, the story was ruined by the narration. That style of sing-song/ironic narration irritates me to the point where it just plain makes me want to throw something. I do wish there was some school to teach wanna-be narrators how to read a novel so that it enhances the book, rather than lapse into a bored monotone that either sends the listener into a sleep haze, or annoys them into an anger haze.
